Medrano East rewrites state meet discus mark

L A KEWOOD» Pueblo East senior Kain Medrano bettered the state meet discus throw record he set a year ago Thursday, with a 188feet, 6-inch toss in the 2019 Colorado state track and field championsh­ips.

Medrano won the Class 4A event for the second straight year at Jeffco Stadium. A year ago, he broke the state meet record with a throw of 185.09.

The Colorado prep record is held by U.S. Olympian Mason Finley, who threw for 236.06 in 2009 when attending Buena Vista High. Finley, a former University of Kansas and Wyoming All-American, finished 11th at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Medrano is heading to UCLA to play football in the fall.

3,200 winners.

Thursday’s early races included the finals for the 4A 3200-meter run. Junior Dylan Schubert of Thompson Valley won the boys race (9:24.87) and Durango junior Madeleine Burns won for the girls (10:53.63).

The 5A 3,200 runs are scheduled to be the first two finals events Friday.

Long jump.

Grandview senior Darrian Leu-Pierre won the boys’ 5A high jump at 6-feet, 8 inches — an inch better than runner-up senior Hector Ortega of Northglenn.

The state meet record has been in place since 1987, when Jeff Martinez of Brighton went 7-2. However, 2004 Olympic silver medalist Matt Hemingway of Buena Vista set the Colorado prep record of 7.4 in 1991.

Sophomore winner.

Taryn Burkett, a sophomore at Fort Collins, earned the top seed in the 5A girls’ triple jump at 38-feet, 6 inches, and she won the event with an effort of 38.4.

Braxton MorganMira­nda, a sophomore at Palmer, captured the mixed 100-meter dash Special Olympics race with a time of 13.81 seconds. MorganMira­nda edged senior Preston Himler of Erie (13.90).

In the 100-meter dash Paralympic race, Niwot sophomore Michael Barrett was victorious with a time of 14.1.
