Kid-friendly hikes

- By Heather Balogh

There is no doubt about it: Denver is an outdoor-based city. That shouldn’t change when you have kids. After all, studies tell us it is important to get our children outside. But it can be difficult when you are not sure where to go or which hikes are most appropriate for your family. We’ve rounded up eight great hikes in Denver that we know your kids will love. Some have mellow terrain that is great for little legs, while others have fun features such as castles that will pique the interest of the most-discerning preteens. Take a look and grab your backpack, because hiking season is here. (Editor’s note: Hiking distances are from each park’s website.)

FLATIRONS VISTA Where: Boulder Length: 3.5 miles round trip

Situated off of Colorado 93 just south of Boulder, Flatirons Vista is great for children because of its topography, or lack thereof. Hikers begin at the trailhead and, assuming they stay to the right and follow the Flatirons Vista North Trail, won’t see a smidge of elevation gain. The first 1.1 miles of this hike are absolutely flat as the trail meanders along the plains abutting the foothills. This makes for a doable hike for little legs and — if creativity allows — more than one conversation about dinosaurs roaming Earth.

For older children who can hike farther, head left at the trail split and catch the Flatirons Vista South Trail as it wraps back toward the trailhead. Note: As with all trails in Boulder County, there is a $5 daily parking fee for cars not registered in Boulder County. If you visit frequently, it’s worth investing in the $25 annual pass.
