C ARSON , C A LIF . scored late, Tim Howard had his first shutout of the season and the Rapids beat the Los Angeles Galaxy 1-0 on Sunday night for their first win of the season.

Howard finished with a seasonhigh six saves for Colorado (1-9-2), which snapped an 11-game winless streak, including eight consecutiv­e losses.

Former University of Denver star Shinyashik­i, on the counteratt­ack, brought it down the middle and tapped it to Kei Kamara, whose shot from the center of the box was stopped by sliding goalkeeper David Bingham. The rebound bounced to Shinyashik­i, who first-timed a leftfooter into an empty net from near the spot in the 82nd minute.

Los Angeles was without Zlatan Ibrahimovi­c, who leads the team with nine goals this season, who served the first of a two-game suspension for violent conduct. The Galaxy (75-1) has lost four in a row.

U.S. tops Germany in world hockey.

» Dylan Larkin scored midway through the third period to help the United States beat Germany 3-1 at the world championsh­ips.

Alec Martinez had two assists for the U.S., and Cory Schneider stopped 24 shots. Jack Eichel made it 3-1 late in the third.

Frederik Tiffels put Germany in front midway through the first period, and James van Riemsdyk tied it for the Americans less than two minutes later.

The U.S. has won five straight games in Group A since opening with a 4-1 loss to the host Slovaks.

The U.S. closes the preliminar­y round Tuesday against rival Canada, and the quarterfin­als begin Thursday.

The Americans trail group-leading Finland, which blanked France 3-0 with a goal in each period and Kevin Lankinen’s strong play in net.

Michael Frolik scored to help the Czech Republic beat winless Austria 8-0 in Bratislava in Group B. In the same group, Nikita Kucherov scored twice and Russia beat Switzerlan­d 3-0 to stay undefeated.

Nadal wins ninth Italian title.

After losing in the semifinals of three straight clay-court tournament­s, Nadal dominated for stretches against his longtime rival, Novak Djokovic, in a 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 win for a record-extending ninth Italian Open title.

It marked the first time in an Open Era-record 54 meetings, and in their 142nd set against each other, that Nadal won a set against Djokovic without conceding a game.

Lillard suffers separated ribs.

Lillard suffered separated ribs in Game 2 of the Western Conference finals against the Golden State Warriors.

Lillard confirmed the injury on Sunday, a day after the Trail Blazers lost 110-99 in Game 3. Lillard was 5-of-18 from the floor and finished with 19 points in Portland’s third straight loss in the series.

The injury was originally reported by The Athletic. Lillard said the separation is on the left side, and he wore protective padding in Game 3.

Lillard was hurt in the third quarter Thursday when Golden State’s KevonLoone­ylandedont­opofhimina scramble for the ball.

He said the injury is painful at times when he gets winded.

Roglic wins Stage 9 of Giro d’Italia.

ARINO» Primoz Roglic of Slovenia SA NM won the ninth stage of the Giro d’Italia as Italian cyclist Valerio Conti extended his overall lead after the individual time trial.

Roglic, who also won the opening individual time trial, was quickest on the rain-soaked 22-mile route from Riccione that had an uphill finish in San Marino — the only time this year that the Giro crosses into another country. — The Associated Press
