The headline in today’s Denver Post read, “Electric costs more than diesel.” This is blatantly misleading. One needs to look at overall costs: Maintenance for electric motors is far, far, less than maintaining fossil-fuel engines. Electric does not require oil, tune-ups or any of the other myriad needs of diesel or gas engines, which also means less labor costs, less time in a service bay and more time out on the streets serving metro area residents. In addition to these advantages and cost savings, and of perhaps more importance, electric reduces RTD’s carbon footprint, which is better for everyone.
