GRANT SETS RECORD IN OUTLAWS’ VICTORY

ATLANTA» John Grant Jr. broke Major League Lacrosse’s all-time scoring record (regular season and postseason) on Saturday during the Denver Outlaws’ 18-16 victory against the Atlanta Blaze at Grady Stadium.

The attackman Grant entered the game with 595 career points, one behind Paul Rabil’s record. Grant tallied a goal and an assist in the first half to surpass the standard.

Denver improved to 2-1 in the young season, while Atlanta fell to 1-1.

Midfielder Zach Currier led the Outlaws with three goals an an assist.

Full Ironman leaving Boulder. BOULDER» Sunday’s race will mark the final time the full 140.6-mile course of the sixth annual Ironman Boulder triathlon will be run.

Boulder will still be home to the shorter Ironman 70.3, though. That race will be Aug. 19. — Daily Camera Skinner re-signs with Sabres.

BUFFALO, grateful for the faith the Buffalo Sabres showed in making him their second highest-paid player and welcomes the increased expectatio­ns that come with his newly signed eight-year, $72 million contract.

Skinner says it’s his job to produce and he looks forward to playing a role in helping transform a young and rebuilding team into a contender.

He scored a career-best and teamleadin­g 40 goals in his first season in Buffalo. The Sabres acquired the ninth-year player in a trade with Carolina in August, and he was eligible to become an unrestrict­ed free agent this summer.

Skinner said numerous factors went into his decision to re-sign with Buffalo, including a recent conversati­on he had with newly hired coach Ralph Krueger. Skinner, who has topped 30 goals four times, said he was impressed by Krueger’s vast experience in and outside of the NHL, and enthusiasm he expressed of taking the job.

Vettel earns Grand Prix pole. MONTREAL» Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel produced a stunning final lap to clinch pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix.

Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton looked set for a career-extending 86th pole — and a record seventh in Montreal — but Vettel found extra speed in the final sector of qualifying.

It was the 56th pole of the German’s career and first since the German GP last July.

The four-time F1 champion was 0.2 seconds quicker than Hamilton and about 0.7 faster than Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc.

Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo was fourth with Red Bull’s Pierre Gasly in fifth and Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas in sixth after a poor performanc­e in the last part of qualifying. He span and was somewhat fortunate to avoid clipping the barriers.

GDYNIA, was knocked out of the Under-20 World Cup in the quarterfin­als for the third straight tournament, losing to Ecuador 2-1.

Jhon Espinoza scored the tiebreakin­g goal in the 43rd minute for Ecuador, which next plays South Korea on Tuesday. Italy meets Ukraine in the other semifinal.

José Cifuentes put Ecuador ahead in the 30th minute and Tim Weah tied the score in the 36th.

The U.S. lost to Serbia on penalty kicks in the 2015 quarterfin­al and to Venezuela in extra time in the 2017 quarters. The Americans have not advanced past the quarterfin­als since 1999, when a U.S. team with goalkeeper Kasey Keller lost to Nigeria in the semifinals.
