Praising, criticizing Donald Trump’s tariffs
Re: “Trump: Mexico deal reached,” June 8 news story
President Donald Trump has extracted commitments from Mexico to reduce the flow of immigrants and bogus asylum seekers into the United States without the necessity of imposing tariffs.
Mexico will keep more asylum seekers in Mexico and deploy 6,000 troops to secure the Mexico-Guatemala border better. For that, we should all be glad.
Tariffs would have been costly, although probably not as costly as continuing the flood of people entering the United States illegally at current levels. But due to the recent deal, tariffs are a cost we will not have to pay.
Congratulations to the president for finding effective ways to deal with the border crisis and enforce our immigration laws despite the disgraceful resistance of the do-nothing Democrats and some Republicans in Congress. Osborne Dykes, Denver
Re: “Gardner criticizes tariffs,” June 8 news story
It is difficult to determine which action was more ignorant and insensitive to Americans: President Donald Trump’s threat to punish Mexico with tariffs that Americans pay for or Sen. Cory Gardner’s too-late letter stating the obvious mistake more than a week after it was announced and on the same day Trump declared that a deal was reached.
Gardner’s letter has the accidental reveal of its purpose when he writes, “hardworking Americans are unlikely to overlook the hit to their pocketbooks.”
In other words, Gardner will always have Trump’s back unless there is a chance his voters will notice; at that point, he’ll stage a mock show of dissent.
Guess what, Cory. We noticed. Norman Davey, Centennial
