Take that L on the way out

For the second time in six days, Rockies rookie Peter Lambert beat the Chicago Cubs on their own turf.

Whether the ballpark is at Addison and Clark in Wrigleyvil­le or 20th and Blake in Wrigleyvil­le West, it doesn’t matter. Lambert is a Cubbies- killer.

Fly the W? Not here, in LoDo. Or there, on the North Side.

Hey, Chicago: Take that L on the way out.

In his second major- league start, Lambert beat the Cubs for the second time. This time, despite refugees from the Windy City attempting an unfriendly takeover of the Coors Field confines, this young right- hander went five strong innings and sent half the crowd of 43,126 back home to cry in their Old Style after a 10- 3 loss to Colorado.

Rockies win, Rockies win, Rockies win!

In any baseball season that begins with 12 losses in 15 games, it almost certainly requires a little magic for a team to recover and make a serious run at the playoffs. If the Rockies have any hope of playing games that matter in October, that magic will probably have to be named Lambert.

As much as any of us might wish for general manager Jeff Bridich to make a big trade for an establishe­d, veteran pitcher, in- season blockbuste­r deals are not the Rockies’ style. So Marcus Stroman of Toronto probably isn’t walking through the doors of the Colorado clubhouse anytime soon, in no small part because franchise owner Dick Monfort is extremely reluctant to part ways with any of his “kids” in the organizati­on.

Where does that leave the Rockies in the hunt for a wildcard berth? At a time when the
