Wie had surgery on her right hand in October and tried to return in February, completing one tournament. She sat out a month and returned to the LPGA Tour’s first major and to her hometown event in Hawaii, both times missing the cut. After withdrawin­g from the U.S. Women’s Open, the 29-year-old Wie played in the Women’s PGA Championsh­ip at Hazeltine National and shot rounds of 84-82.

In an Instagram post Friday, Wie says, “After doing everything I could to play this year, I have made the decision to take the rest of the year off from competitiv­e golf.” She says that will be her best chance to “finally get healthy.”

» A person with knowledge of the details says the Brooklyn Nets have extended a qualifying offer to D’Angelo Russell, making the point guard a restricted free agent.

The decision Friday allows the Nets to match any offer Russell receives from another team.

Russell was an All-Star for the first time after leading the Nets to a 42-40 record and averaging 21.1 points.

But his return is far from certain, with the Nets able to afford two top free agents and considered one of the favorites to land Kyrie Irving, who plays Russell’s position.

Antetokoun­mpo to play for Greece at Basketball World Cup.

GREECE» Giannis Antetokoun­mpo will play for Greece at the basketball World Cup in China, saying on Friday he can play any position.

The NBA MVP said he hasn’t “talked to the coach about which position I’ll be playing ... the important thing is to play.”

The World Cup is from Aug. 31Sept. 15, and Greece is one of 32 qualifiers. Antetokoun­mpo did not play for Greece at the 2017 Eurobasket. His absence led the Greek basketball federation to publicly accuse his Milwaukee Bucks team of staging a knee injury.

Baseball union: Player approval needed to play in Montreal.

LONDON» Baseball’s players’ union says the Tampa Bay Rays would need its permission to play games in Montreal.

Commission­er Rob Manfred said last week the low-drawing Rays may explore a split season in Montreal.

“There is a lot of work that is going to need to be done before that considerat­ion becomes closer to a reality,” Clark said Friday as the New York Yankees took batting practice at Olympic Stadium, a day before playing Boston in the first MLB game in Europe.

Clark said requiring a player to maintain two homes during the season would be “a significan­t burden.”

Bell to stay with Joe Gibbs Racing for at least 1 more year.

Christophe­r Bell plans to stay with Joe Gibbs Racing for at least one more year. That’s about all he knows about the situation at the moment.

The 24-year-old Bell has re-signed with JGR for 2020, but he isn’t sure if he will be staying in the NASCAR Xfinity Series or moving up to the Cup Series.

“I’m good for another year,” he said Friday. “I don’t know what I’m going to be racing, but I will be somewhere.”

Colombia-Chile game delayed because of traffic in Sao Paulo.

» The Copa America quarterfin­al between Colombia and Chile has been delayed after the Chilean squad couldn’t arrive in time because of heavy traffic in Sao Paulo.

The match at the Arena Corinthian­s started 20 minutes after originally scheduled to give Chile time to warm up. Chilean media said it took nearly two hours for the squad to make it to the stadium in the suburbs of Brazil’s biggest city.
