A COOL WAY TO ENJOY THE HEAT

- By Kaitlyn Bancroft

With summer finally here, it’s time to check out Denver’s 16 outdoor and 14 indoor public pools.

Hot, summer days are finally here, and you know what that means: We start to look for airconditioned spaces.

OK, it also means lounging in the sun, sticky-sweet ice cream and hordes of people descending on every public pool known to man.

While we can’t do anything about the crowds, we can give you all the information needed to plan your family’s next outing to any one of Denver’s 16 outdoor and 14 indoor public pools.

Arthur Gilkison, executive assistant of Denver Parks and Recreation, said the city’s 16 outdoor pools are open from early June to mid-august, which typically coincides with the end and beginning of Denver public schools’ year. However, select outdoor pools are open for extended seasons, weekends only through the Sunday before Labor Day. This year, those pools are Berkeley Park, Cook Park, Harvard Gulch, Harvey Park and Mestizo/curtis Park.

He said the city’s 14 indoor pools operate year-round, with schedules published seasonally at denvergov.org.

Single-visit admission prices are listed with our indoor pools list, but there are also options for 15-visit tickets, 30-visit tickets, month-to-month memberships and annual memberships.

Gilkison said seasonal outdoor pool passes grant access to all 16 outdoor pools but do not include access to recreation centers or indoor pools.

Many of the pools have adult swim, lap swim and other types of swim hours, so check the pools’ schedules and pricing options at denver.org under the Denver Parks and Recreation section to make sure you’re taking full advantage of what each has to offer.

So grab your swimsuit and a towel, and remember: Every body is a beach (or public pool) body.
