MOTORCYCLI­ST DUNNE DIES IN HILL CLIMB

» A prominent motorcycle CASCADE racer died Sunday after he crashed near the finish line of an event he had won four times, the Colorado Springs Gazette reported.

Carlin Dunne died at the 97th Broadmoor Pikes Peak Internatio­nal Hill Climb, officials said in a news release.

Dunne, 36, who is from Santa Barbara, Calif., crashed his 2019 Ducati Streetfigh­ter V4 Prototype near the finish line, the newspaper reported.

An ambulance was dispatched to the finish area after the crash. A Gazette reporter witnessed bike shrapnel going over the right edge of the road about 20 yards from the finish line.

The Gazette reported that throughout the morning, riders had trouble with a small hump in the road near the summit. Multiple witnesses said they believed Dunne hit the bump at a high speed, which caused his front wheel to spin out.

This is the seventh death associated with the Hill Climb, the Gazette reported.

Verstappen wins Austrian Grand Prix.

AUSTRIA» Max VerSPIELBE­RG, stappen won the Austrian Grand Prix for a second straight year as Red Bull ended Mercedes’ unbeaten streak this season.

The Dutchman recovered from a poor start to work his way up to the front of the pack from eighth place, and overtook leader Charles Leclerc in a Ferrari with just two laps to go.

Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas completed the podium, ahead of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and championsh­ip leader Lewis Hamilton, who started fourth and lost time to replace the front wing of his Mercedes after 31 laps and finished fifth.

Canadiens clear cap space with deals.

Ducks acquired checking-line forward Nicolas Deslaurier­s in a trade with the Montreal Canadiens.

Montreal got a 2020 fourth-round draft pick and freed up $950,000 under the salary cap in completing its second trade Sunday. The Canadiens earlier traded center Andrew Shaw to Chicago.

The trades freed up $4.85 million in cap space for Montreal a day before the NHL’s free-agency signing period opens.

Deslaurier­s is a hard-hitting left wing, who combined for 12 goals and 19 points in 106 games over two seasons with Montreal. Overall, the 28year-old has 24 goals and 49 points in 317 career games. He spent his first four NHL seasons with the Buffalo Sabres.

Guerrero becomes youngest Derby contestant.

TORONTO» Blue Jays rookie Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is set to become the youngest participan­t in Home Run Derby history when he swings for the $1 million prize in Cleveland on July 8.

Major League Baseball confirmed that Guerrero will participat­e, joining a group that includes Milwaukee’s Christian Yelich, Atlanta’s Ronald Acuna Jr., the New York Mets’ Pete Alonso, Pittsburgh’s Josh Bell and Cleveland’s Carlos Santana. The full field will be revealed Wednesday.

Guerrero, son of Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero, will be 20 years, 114 days old for the derby, 116 days younger than Ken Griffey Jr. for the 1990 showcase. The younger Guerrero was there when his father won the event in San Francisco in 2007.

Bryce Harper is the only other 20year-old to participat­e in the derby.

Braves place Swarzak on IL.

Anthony Swarzak was placed on the 10-day injured list with inflammati­on in his pitching shoulder, a significan­t blow to the bullpen for the NL East leaders.

The team hopes Swarzak will be ready to return immediatel­y after the all-star break on July 12.

The move was made retroactiv­e to Saturday. Right-hander Chad Sobotka was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett.
