FORT CARSON SERGEANT DIES IN AFGHANISTA­N

N.C.» The U.S. Army FORT BRAGG, says a sergeant who was assigned to Fort Carson died from noncombat injuries in Afghanista­n.

The U.S. Army Special Operations Command issued a statement saying that Sgt. 1st Class Elliott J. Robbins died Sunday in Helmand Province. The 31-yearold was from Ogden, Utah, and was assigned to the 10th Special Forces Group at Fort Carson.

The news release provided no more informatio­n about the cause of death.

Robbins joined the Army in 2006 and deployed to Iraq the following year with the 101st Airborne Division.

Migrant in ICE custody dies in hospital.

HOUSTON» A Honduran migrant died in the custody of federal immigratio­n agents after falling ill at a Houston detention facility.

According to a statement Monday by Immigratio­n and Customs Enforcemen­t, Yimi Alexis Balderramo­s-Torres died Sunday in a suburban Houston hospital after he was found unresponsi­ve in his dormitory.

ICE reported Border Patrol had taken the 30-year-old man into custody after encounteri­ng him during a routine traffic stop on May 27. That was 10 days after he’d been returned to Mexico after he was found living illegally in El Paso. He was turned over to ICE agents June 6 and transferre­d on June 18 to the Houston Contract Detention Facility near George Bush Interconti­nental Airport.

Taliban bombing in Kabul kills 6.

AFGHANISTA­N» The KABUL,

Taliban set off a powerful bomb in Kabul on Monday, killing at least six people and wounding more than a hundred, while sending a cloud of smoke billowing over the Afghan capital.

At least 26 children were among the wounded, many of whom were cut by shards of glass when the bomb shattered nearby windows, government spokesman Feroz Bashari said. He said 105 people were hurt.

An education ministry spokeswoma­n, Nooria Nazhat, later raised the number of students who were slightly wounded to 51, from two schools.

Bus crashes into gorge in India’s Kashmir, killing 35.

INDIA» An overcrowde­d SRINAGAR, minibus crashed into a gorge in Indian-controlled Kashmir on Monday, killing at least 35 people and injuring 17 others, officials said.

The bus plunged off the Himalayan mountain road as its driver negotiated a curve and rolled down into a 500-foot-deep gorge along a rocky stream in the southern Kishtwar area, said civil administra­tor Angrez Singh Rana. He said officials were investigat­ing whether it was a mechanical failure or the driver’s negligence.

Bus carrying retirees crashes in Argentina, 13 dead.

ARGENTINA» Officials said a AIRES, bus carrying a group of retirees overturned on a foggy road in Argentina, killing at least 13 passengers and leaving 40 injured.

La Madrid town representa­tive Dardo Herrera told the Todo Noticias television channel that the accident occurred early Monday at a dangerous intersecti­on near his town in Tucuman province. The retirees were accompanie­d by younger passengers. — Denver Post wire services
