USC QB DANIELS OUT FOR SEASON WITH KNEE INJURY

Southern California quarterbac­k J.T. Daniels will miss the rest of the season after tearing a ligament in his right knee during the Trojans’ opener. Daniels was hurt on a blitz when his leg twisted while he was being tackled with 27 seconds left in the first half of USC’s 31-23 victory over Fresno State. Daniels started 11 games last season for USC’s first losing team since 2000, and he won a four-way competitio­n for the starting job last month in camp.

Chargers suspend contract extension talks with RB Gordon.

CALIF.» The Los Angeles Chargers MESA, do not intend to extend running back Melvin Gordon’s contract until after the season. General manager Tom Telesco said during a conference call on Sunday that the team has suspended contract talks with the regular season one week away. Gordon is on the team’s did not report list after holding out during training camp and the preseason.

Lewis scores twice, Rapids beat Red Bulls 2-0.

Lewis scored twice and the Colorado Rapids beat the New York Red Bulls 2-0 on Saturday night. Lewis opened the scoring for the Rapids in the 14th minute. He took it from 30 yards out on the left wing and slotted it past goalkeeper Luis Robles into the right corner. Robles made a pair of diving saves after the 70th minute to keep it a one-goal game until Lewis buried a right-footed blast from the top of the penalty area in the 87th minute.

Richmond to replace Pocono on IndyCar’s 2020 schedule.

OREGON» IndyCar will not return to Pocono Raceway next season and instead will replace the triangular oval with Richmond Raceway on the 2020 schedule. The series last raced on the Virginia track in 2009 and will make its return on June 27 — the same weekend it used during IndyCar’s previous nine-year run at the track.

Southern 500 starts after nearly 4 hour delay.

NASCAR Cup Series race was delayed more than four hours due to heavy rains that hit the track right before the scheduled 4 p.m. MT start.

Racers were called to their cars around 7:20 p.m. Once they rolled off pit road, drivers had several slow warm up laps as the driers that had been on the track worked to dry moisture in the pits.

NASCAR said it took many factors into considerat­ion when deciding to run, including a sold-out crowd at Darlington and the approach of Hurricane Dorian to South Carolina’s coast.

Hannah Green rallies past Noh to win Portland Classic.

Australia’s Hannah Green overcame a three-shot deficit with a final round 5-under 67 to win the Portland Classic and deny teenager Yealimi Noh’s bid to become the third Monday qualifier to win on the LPGA Tour. Green erased a threeshot deficit with two birdies over the final four holes at Columbia Edgewater Country Club. She finished at 21 under and won for the second time this season.

Wes Short Jr. birdies final hole to win Shaw Charity Classic.

Wes Short Jr. made a short birdie putt on the final hole to win the Shaw Charity Classic. His finalround 4-under 66 gave him a 13-under 267 total, one shot ahead of defending champion Scott McCarron. Short’s final round included six birdies and two bogeys to give the 55year-old golfer from Austin, Texas, just his second-ever PGA Tour Champions victory.

Skating entreprene­ur Tom Collins passes away.

Tom Collins, whose Champions on Ice figure skating tour helped hundreds of skaters prolong their careers, had died. He was 88. His family says Collins died Sunday at his home in Minneapoli­s. Among the champions on Collins’ tour were Scott Hamilton, Brian Boitano and Michelle Kwan. — The Associated Press
