For Montez, 2016 win at Oregon “like a dream”

BOULDER» When someone brought up Steven Montez 2016 and that game at Oregon, No. 12 — 2019 Steven Montez — sounded almost embarrasse­d, the way a grown man talks about a rage tweet he fired off when he was 14.

Reporter: Can you believe you ran for 136 yards in that game?

Montez: “At 248 pounds? No I can’t. Kind of still feels like a dream. It was kind of crazy. It’s like an out-of-body experience. Weird.”

More weird: Montez, then a redshirt freshman, racked up 21 carries the last time the CU Buffs graced Autzen Stadium, a 41-38 Buffaloes victory. Even more weird: Through five games, 2019 Steven Montez has toted the rock 22 times. Total.

“If it’s third and short or something like that, and I think I can make a move and go get vertical with it and pick up a first down, then I’m going to do it,” said Montez, whose Buffs visit the No. ranked 13 Ducks on Friday night. “But if it’s longer and it’s third and 8 or 9 and I’ve got a long way to run … I like Dimitri Stanley, K.D. Nixon and Laviska Shenault with the ball in their hands a lot better than I like myself with the ball in my hands.”
