Broncos set up to make it a three-game winning streak

- Mark Kiszla responds

Not so tough. The Kansas City Chiefs are so soft! Ron, strong as the Rocky Mountains

Kiz: True dat. The Chiefs are soft. Soft like buttah. Too soft to win the Super Bowl. If the Broncos really are better than their 1-4 record, as players insist, they should be able to turn their stumbling start to this season into a three-game winning streak within a span of five days, by beating both Tennessee and K.C.

Purple, orange and blue. I did some research, and it appears the one prerequisite to be the general manager of either the Rockies or Broncos is the ability to color between the lines. Wendell, Longmont

Kiz: Rebuilding a team requires imagination. So is this what you’re trying to say: John Elway has 64 colors in his big box of crayons, but he uses only orange and blue?

Just going by the book. I know you get paid for hyperbole, Kiz. But are you aware of the questions your views about the Broncos’ lack of leadership raise? They need a leader who will hold teammates accountable, but isn’t that the coach’s primary job?

If a player misses meetings or doesn’t give his all, teammates should call him on it. But if tackle Garett Bolles tries his hardest but is simply outmatched by a better athlete, it won’t help for a teammate to scold him. Gary, holding Kiz accountable

Kiz: Scolding? News flash: This is 2019, not 1959. The ability to scold doesn’t make anyone a leader. Sports leadership is a more nuanced art. To learn more, I suggest you (and Chris Harris) read “The Captain Class,” among my favorite sports books of the past 10 years.

Young guns. Who gives a rat about who the leader is or isn’t, as long as there’s clear improvement by the Broncos? What good does it do for you to write about possible division between veterans and young players, Kiz? Please help Colorado sports to be interesting and fun, not the source of material for a cheap gossip rag. Ed, sis-boom-bah

Kiz: Will Phillip Lindsay, Courtland Sutton and Dalton Risner form the core of young leadership able to push the Broncos into a fresh era of success? The answer will not only be intriguing, but critical to Elway’s long-term future with the team.

MPJ? Show me! Does the Nuggets’ coach (no idea who that is) understand there are fans in Missouri staying up past their bedtimes to watch NBA preseason games just to see Michael Porter Jr. play? Put him in already! Don’t wait until the second half. Mike, St. Louis

Kiz: Are you trying to tell us there are places in these great United States where a fan can actually watch the Nuggets and Avs on TV? No way! Here in this dusty old cowtown, we gather around the radio in the parlor.

Time to fly away. And today’s parting shot is an attempt to rewrite the Rockies’ sad story as a musical. (It helps if you’re old enough to remember the song “Bye Bye Blackbird.” The staff here at Kickin’ It Headquarters likes to sip cocktails to the version by Dean Martin.)

Pack up the Rockies’ cares and woe. Feeling low. Let Jeff go. Bye-bye, Bridich. Bill, tunesmith
