SEAHAWKS SHORE UP DBS WITH DIGGS

WASH.» The Seattle Seahawks RENTON, addressed depth concerns in the defensive backfield by acquiring Quandre Diggs from the Detroit Lions on Tuesday in exchange for a 2020 fifthround pick.

Seattle has major depth worries at safety after Bradley McDougald and Lano Hill missed Sunday’s loss to Baltimore with injuries. Hill is expected to be out a few weeks with an elbow injury, while Seattle is hoping McDougald will return soon after being sidelined by back spasms.

Diggs will add some needed versatilit­y. He can play free safety and nickel and could be an option after free safety Tedric Thompson has struggled in coverage at times this season. Seattle coach Pete Carroll has been critical of some big plays given up by Thompson, including a 50-yard pass in the loss to the Ravens.

Jaguars bring in LB Smith.

Jaguars signed former Super Bowl MVP Malcolm Smith to help fill holes at linebacker.

Smith played 12 games for San Francisco last season. He’s best known for his MVP performanc­e in the 2014 Super Bowl, when he had 10 tackles and returned an intercepti­on 69 yards for a touchdown in Seattle’s 43-8 win over the Broncos.

The Jaguars (3-4) also re-signed linebacker Donald Payne on Tuesday. To make room for Smith and Payne, Jacksonvil­le placed tight end Geoff Swaim (concussion/ankle) and linebacker D.J. Alexander (foot) on injured reserve.

Bruins place Krejci on IR.

BOSTON» The Boston Bruins placed forward David Krejci on injured reserve with an upper-body injury.

Kreici has missed the past two games since he was hurt in the first period of a 4-2 win over Anaheim on Oct. 14. He has one assist this season. Bjork leads Providence of the AHL with three goals and five assists.

Ujiri won’t face charges.

FRANCISCO» California prosecuSAN tors announced that they won’t charge Toronto Raptors president Masai Ujiri for shoving a sheriff’s deputy after the NBA championsh­ipwinning game in Oakland last June.

The Alameda County district attorney’s office made the announceme­nt when the Raptors were in Toronto receiving their championsh­ip rings for defeating the Golden State Warriors.

The DA’s office said it met with former Nuggets executive Ujiri and his attorneys Monday and decided the matter was better handled “outside of the courtroom.”

Pistons’ Griffin to miss season debut.

DETROIT» The Detroit Pistons will begin the season without star forward Blake Griffin, whose injury issues have flared up again.

The Pistons said Griffin would not travel for Wednesday night’s game at Indiana and would continue a treatment and conditioni­ng regimen for left hamstring and posterior knee soreness. He will be re-evaluated for a return the first week of November.

Sounders’ Morris is MLS comeback player of year.

Sounders forward Jordan Morris was voted the MLS comeback player of the year after scoring 10 goals in the regular season in his return from a major knee injury that cost him the entire 2018 season.

Morris finished with 28.23% of the vote, beating out fellow finalists Mark-Anthony Kaye (24.5 of Los Angeles FC and Kacper Przbylko (8.36%) of Philadelph­ia.

Morris suffered a torn ACL in his right knee just before the start of the 2018 season during a CONCACAF Champions League match in Honduras. The Sounders kept Morris sidelined all last year in the hopes he would return healthy.

Iran banned from judo meets.

Iran was banned from internatio­nal judo competitio­ns for refusing to let its athletes fight Israeli opponents.
