POLICE: OFFICERS SHOT MAN WHO REFUSED TO DROP WEAPON

One man was hospitaliz­ed Sunday after he was shot by police in Lakewood, authoritie­s said.

Dispatcher­s received a call about a disturbanc­e between two people from one of the people involved at about 2:45 p.m. Sunday in the 10700 block of West Seventh Avenue, said Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman.

Officers responded to Villa Rosa Apartments and a man involved in the disturbanc­e met them in the parking lot area of the complex, Countryman said.

The man presented a weapon during the encounter, Countryman said, though he declined to specify the type of weapon the man was carrying, citing how early it is in the investigat­ion.

“Our officers challenged him and ordered him to drop the weapon and he did not,” Countryman said. “In return, our officers responded to the threat.”

Multiple officers fired shots, hitting the man, and he was transporte­d to a hospital, Countryman said. The man’s condition is unknown.

No officers were injured in the incident.

Lakewood police said in a news release Sunday night that the Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team was investigat­ing the shooting.

1 dead in crash at I-225 interchang­e in Aurora.

One person was killed in a car crash early Sunday morning in Aurora, police said.

Police responded to a report of a crash at 1:20 a.m. at the East Mississipp­i Avenue and Interstate 225 interchang­e, according to police in a news release.

Two people from one vehicle were transporte­d to a hospital and one was pronounced dead. That person’s identity has not yet been released.

Authoritie­s are investigat­ing whether alcohol, drugs or speed contribute­d to the crash.

Aurora police Sgt. Michael Douglass declined to comment on how many vehicles were involved in the crash or to provide additional details about what occurred.

Anyone with informatio­n about the crash is asked contact police.

The early morning crash marked the 22nd traffic fatality this year in Aurora, police said.

Inmate flees Saguache County jail, sheriff’s office says.

An inmate described as having “violent tendencies” escaped from the Saguache County Jail on Saturday night while naked, according to the Saguache County Sheriff’s Office.

James “Jaime” Stewart fled at about 7:10 p.m., the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post.

Details about how the man escaped were not released.

Stewart is described as having brown hair and blue eyes, is 6 feet, 1 inch tall and weighs about 230 pounds. He was being held at the jail for violating his parole and has been known to have “violent tendencies,” according to the sheriff’s office.

Anyone who sees Stewart is asked not to approach him and call 911.
