Tiger Woods will have an ear piece, a radio and his golf clubs at the Presidents Cup. Woods created his own slice of history Thursday night by becoming the first Presidents Cup captain to use one of his wild-card selections on himself.

He is the second playing captain in the Presidents Cup. Hale Irwin played in the inaugural matches in 1994 when he qualified for the team. He had Paul Azinger, who was recovering from cancer, as one of his assistants.

Woods was introduced as captain in March 2018, when he was just returning from a fourth surgery on his lower back. He has won three times since then, including his 15th major when he won the Masters in April.

Sharks’ Kane sued by Vegas casino over gambling IOUs.

» A Las Vegas Strip casino is suing San Jose Sharks forward Evander Kane, alleging he failed to repay a $500,000 gambling debt racked up during a playoff series in Las Vegas last April.

Cosmopolit­an of Las Vegas lawsuit alleges the 28-year-old Kane, who is a Canadian citizen, received eight casino credits of varying amounts about April 15. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported the date coincides with Games 3 and 4 of a playoff series between the Sharks and the Vegas Golden Knights.

UConn’s Bouknight suspended 3 games for car crash.

CONN.» UConn freshman guard James Bouknight has received a three-game suspension over allegation­s he fled from a car crash.

Coach Dan Hurley announced the discipline Thursday, calling it “appropriat­e.”

An arrest warrant affidavit alleges Bouknight smelled of alcohol after he crashed a car into a street sign near campus early in the morning of Sept. 27. Police say he left the scene but later turned himself in.

Union prepared to strike if deal can’t be reached with MLS.

The head of the Major League Soccer Players Associatio­n said players are prepared to strike if they can’t negotiate an acceptable collective bargaining agreement with the league.

MLSPA Executive Director Bob Foose spoke on a conference call with reporters Thursday as the league prepared for the MLS Cup championsh­ip game between the Seattle Sounders and Toronto FC on Sunday.

The current collective bargaining agreement expires on Jan. 31.

Astros president Ryan shifts to lesser role with team.

Astros president Reid Ryan is shifting to a lesser role in the organizati­on and owner Jim Crane’s son is joining the executive team, moves announced 11 days after Crane apologized to a Sports Illustrate­d reporter and retracted a statement by the club accusing her of trying to “fabricate a story.”

Crane said Thursday he was bringing in his son, Jared, to get more experience and to help in the organizati­on. Crane maintained the moves were not related to the incident with SI or the firing of an assistant general manager.

Carli Lloyd scores twice, U.S. holds off Sweden 3-2.

OHIO» Carli COLUMBUS, Lloyd scored twice, Christen Press added a goal and the United States held off Sweden 3-2 on Thursday night at Mapfre Stadium, giving Vlatko Andonovski a victory in his first match as head coach.

The U.S. is 19-1-3 in 2019 and has a 22-match unbeaten streak.

The U.S. dominated early in the friendly, as Lloyd took a pass in the third minute from Christen Press with a right-footed shot from the center of the box and put it past goalkeeper Hedviq Lindahl to the bottom right corner.

Press followed in the 28th minute, faking out a pair of defenders with fancy footwork and burying a ball from Lindsey Horan for her 50th goal in inter national competitio­n.
