ACT TO ALLOW SUPERSCORE­S FOR STUDENTS WHO TRY AGAIN

Starting in September 2020, students who take the ACT will be allowed to retake individual sections and combine their best results in each section into one “superscore.”

The ACT has sections testing grammar and punctuatio­n skills, math, reading and science. It also has an optional writing section.

Students also will have the option of taking the ACT at testing centers on specified test dates, allowing for faster scoring.

Education nonprofit receives federal grant.

BSCS Science Learning, which is based in Colorado Springs, will receive $8 million from the U.S. Department of Education to improve teacher training.

BSCS will use the money over five years to develop a program where elementary school teachers improve their science lessons by analyzing video recordings of other teachers.

Most of the testing will be done in Kentucky and Tennessee schools.

Douglas County schools expand outreach.

The Douglas County School District is working with a consultant to reach out to Spanish-speaking families and encourage them to be involved in schools.

The funding for workshops about getting involved came from a $130,000 award the district received for its work with students learning to speak English. Eight families participat­ed in the first group.

Partners donate thousands for DPS schools.

The Denver Public Schools Foundation reported its corporate partners donated $37,000 worth of back-to-school supplies this fall, as well as winter coats for students at Valverde Elementary.

The foundation estimated donations, including time spent on murals at seven Denver schools, have exceeded $160,000 this school year.

Band gives grants for music programs.

Face Vocal Band donated about $20,000 from proceeds of a July concert at Red

Rocks Amphitheat­re for school music programs.

The Colorado Department of Education’s Technology, Instrument­s, Guests, Experience­s and Resources grant funds instrument repair, uniforms and other costs associated with music programs. The band’s donations funded TIGER grants for 19 school districts.

Face Vocal Band is an a cappella quintet based in Boulder. It has raised money for Colorado school music programs since 2007.
