Mccaffrey hire makes Bears smarter than Rams

- Readers talk and columnist Mark Kiszla responds

Negative Nancies: Genuine question, Kiz: When was the last time you recall a hiring decision that was received as poorly as Colorado State naming Steve Addazio as football coach? My informal social media poll: 99.5% hate it; 0.5% don’t like it, but give him a chance. I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed so much instant negativity.

T.B., genuinely puzzled

Kiz: Let’s take a look at two recent hires in our fair state by college football programs in distress. The University of Northern Colorado thought out of the box and took a chance on Ed Mccaffrey, a local Broncos legend. Colorado State got itself painted into a corner and hired Urban Meyer’s third-best friend. The staff here at Kickin’ It Headquarters wishes Steve Addazio good luck. He’s going to need it. But you tell me what Tony Alford is supposed to think when his alma mater passes over a successful assistant coach looking for a break in favor of a retread from the old-boy network who couldn’t cut it at Boston College.

Cost-effective? Was it a money issue for Colorado State? Or was it because the Rams liked how the new football stadium looked against Boise State, and want to have similarly sparse crowds for the next few years? Maybe stadium maintenance is cheaper when no one shows up.

John, green, gold and hurting

Kiz: While the Rams are scheduled to open the 2020 season in Fort Collins against Colorado, I’m thinking the must-see game on their schedule will be later in September, when Mccaffrey and Northern Colorado pay a visit to Canvas Stadium. The Rams should be at least four-touchdown favorites to win. It’s a cupcake on the CSU schedule, right? But if Eddie Mac and the Bears somehow pull off the upset, he should be awarded Addazio’s job on the spot.

A little diversity. No one can handle the fact that a basketball player can be as good as Nuggets center Nikola Jokic, yet look like he does. It sprains the average sports fan’s brain. It sprains a few media-type brains, as well.

Peg, celebrating our differences

Kiz: Know one little reason America might need sports now more than ever? It’s good for Jokic and Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson to sprain all our brains and encourage us to re-examine preconceived notions about what makes an athlete great. I can’t speak for anybody else, so let me personally thank Jokic and Jackson for that.

Just say no. Carmelo Anthony is not even close to being worthy to having his Nuggets jersey retired. Why hang a jersey for somebody who didn’t want to be here and was/is all about himself ?

Dave, Avs fan

Kiz: As I recall, goalie Patrick Roy asked out of Montreal. Does that make him a bum?

A classic. And today’s parting shot is a holiday greeting from a kind soul trying to make this old dude feel a little better about looking in the mirror.

From your writing style, Kiz, I can understand why The Post replaced your mug shot in the paper with one of Don Rickles.
