MAN, WOMAN KILLED FRIDAY IN ARVADA IDENTIFIED

A woman killed in a domestic violence incident in Arvada on Friday and the man who allegedly killed her, and who was then shot dead by police, have been identified.

At about 5:05 a.m. Friday, officers were called to 5360 Everett St. on a report of a domestic violence stabbing death, police said in a Monday news release. The victim was identified as 40year-old Katrina Perez.

The suspect in her death, Manuel Arebalo, 40, was still in the apartment when officers arrived and made entry.

“Officers engaged Arebalo and would eventually shoot Arebalo to defend themselves and attempt to help Katrina,” according to the news release. Both Perez and Arebalo were pronounced dead at the scene.

The officers involved in the incident were not identified.

The Jefferson County Critical Incident Team is investigat­ing the officerinv­olved shooting. Each officer who fired is on paid administra­tive leave, per department protocol, while the investigat­ion is ongoing, police said.

Former TSA agent pleads guilty to first-degree assault. A former Transporta­tion Security Administra­tion agent accused of sexually assaulting three young girls pleaded guilty to first-degree assault Monday in Adams County District Court, prosecutor­s said.

Matthew Paul Barnett, 34, of Thornton, also pleaded guilty to attempted sexual assault on a child, according to the

Adams County District Attorney’s Office.

Barnett was charged with sexual assault on a child as a pattern of conduct and by a person in a position of trust involving three girls, ages 6 and 7, according to a news release. Barnett pleaded guilty as part of a plea agreement that calls for a sentence of 18 to 32 years in prison.

An investigat­ion began based on allegation­s out of Winter Park and investigat­ors found additional incidents in Adams County, the release said.

Barnett was arrested in April 2019 at Denver Internatio­nal Airport and TSA fired him after his arrest. He is scheduled to be sentenced on May 1.

Man indicted for not reporting to serve tax evasion sentence faces five more years. A Colorado man who failed to show up to serve a prison sentence for tax evasion was indicted Thursday by a federal grand jury and now faces an additional five years of imprisonme­nt.

Lawrence Martin Birk founded Tarryall River Log Homes in 2000 but didn’t pay his federal taxes for more than 20 years. After the IRS began collection efforts, he tried to conceal the money, according to the U.S. Department of Justice

He was convicted in July and sentenced to 60 months in prison, three years of supervised release and was ordered to pay more than $1.8 million in restitutio­n to the IRS. He was supposed to report to prison in November, but he allegedly fled and was recently arrested.

Constructi­on worker plunges 40 feet down partial elevator shaft. A constructi­on worker injured Thursday after a 40-foot fall down an elevator shaft under constructi­on was hoisted to safety by firefighte­rs and a crane operator.

The work-related accident happened at a constructi­on site near West Quincy Avenue and South Pierce Way, according to West Metro Fire and Rescue.

Two firefighte­rs climbed down the shaft to reach the injured worker, according to West Metro. Rescuers then used a rope system, an on-site constructi­on crane and an emergency rescue litter to safely hoist the injured worker out of the shaft.

The worker was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not life threatenin­g, the fire department said.
