DENVER ZOO ANNOUNCES RHINO BIRTH
After a whopping 16 months of pregnancy, one of the Denver Zoo’s rhinoceroses gave birth to a sweet baby girl that likely weighs more than 100 pounds.
The greater one-horned rhino — which has yet to be named — was born Saturday and is the first of the species to be born at the Denver Zoo, according to a fundraising letter sent out Wednesday by the zoo.
Tensing immediately showed signs of good mothering, according to the email. “Tensing’s journey from pregnancy to motherhood exemplifies the care our team provides to ensure our animals are able to voluntarily participate in their own medical care,” assistant pachyderm curator Lindsey Kirkman said in the email. “It took extraordinary patience and dedication over countless hours to make Tensing feel at ease with the artificial insemination and ultrasound procedures that ultimately resulted in a healthy mom and calf.”
The baby rhino won’t be visible to the public for at least six weeks as she and her mother bond.
