SALT LAKE CITY VOWS TO BE TRANSPAREN­T, FRUGAL IN OLYMPIC BID

» Leaders of a new Salt SALT LAKE CITY

Lake City Olympic bid committee vowed Wednesday to be transparen­t and frugal as they design a plan based around existing venues and experience from hosting the 2002 Winter Olympics but that will also include new, modern ideas.

The committee held its first meeting as it sets out to assess whether Salt Lake City should bid for the 2030 or 2034 Winter Olympics. There’s no timeline for that decision.

Pugh, Davidson back on U.S. roster for She Believes. CHICAGO» Forward Mallory Pugh of Littleton and defender Tierna Davidson are back with the U.S. women’s national team for the upcoming She Believes tournament. Both players, who were on the team’s World Cup-winning squad last year, were not included on the smaller roster that took part in CONCACAF Olympic qualifying earlier this month. The She Believes tournament, which includes England, Japan and Spain, begins March 5.

Sharapova retires from tennis at age 32 with 5 Slam titles. Maria Sharapova quietly walked away from tennis at the age of 32 on Wednesday, ending a career that featured five Grand Slam titles, time at No. 1 in the WTA rankings and a 15-month doping ban. She has been dealing with problems in her right shoulder for years and lost the last four matches she played at major tournament­s. This season, Sharapova played only two matches and lost both.

Mountain West believe football fans around their conference­s will be eager to see what’s inside Sofi Stadium. The conference­s’ commission­ers announced the new LA Bowl on Wednesday at the under-constructi­on stadium south of downtown Los Angeles. For at least the next six years, the Mountain West’s top team will face the fifth choice from the Pac-12 in December at the home stadium of the NFL’s Rams and Chargers.

Sixers’ Embiid fined for flipping off Hawk, cursing on air. NEW YORK»

The NBA fined Philadelph­ia 76ers center Joel Embiid $25,000 on Wednesday, two days after he made an obscene gesture on the court against Atlanta and used profane language during a live television interview. In announcing the fine, the NBA noted that the amount “reflects his multiple prior violations of acceptable on-court decorum.”

Hornets’ Monk suspended indefinite­ly for drug violation. CHARLOTTE, N.C. » Hornets guard Malik Monk has been suspended without pay for violating the terms of the NBA/NBPA anti-drug program. The suspension begins with Wednesday night’s game against the New York Knicks and will continue until he is determined to be in full compliance with the program.

Ex-TCU, Seattle QB gets 3 years in prison for beating woman.

FORT WORTH TEXAS » Former TCU and Seattle Seahawks quarterbac­k Trevone Boykin was sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty Wednesday to charges from the 2018 beating of his girlfriend.

Boykin and prosecutor­s agreed to the sentence in return for his guilty plea Wednesday to aggravated assault and witness tampering charges. Boykin’s attorney said his client will be eligible for parole in less than a year.
