Nesting golden eagles prompt trail closure

- By Wendy Holmes YourHub Contributor Wendy Holmes is director of communications and public affairs for Douglas County.

A 1-mile section of the East/West Regional Trail in Douglas County and sections of the HRCA’s Wildcat Mountain Trail are closed until further notice.

It may seem far away, but spring is almost here and there’s new life in Douglas County. And that new life has prompted closure of a section of trail system in the county and the Highlands Ranch Community Association’s Backcountry Wilderness Area property.

In compliance with federal and state law, the return of nesting golden eagles will keep the trail section closed until further notice. (For details of the trail system and closure, see a map at dpo.st/3a1kgK1.)

The Highlands Ranch Community Association and Douglas County thank residents and visitors for respectfully allowing this protected species the opportunity and space to nurture new life.

The protection of the golden eagle nest and nesting area is a partnership between the HRCA’s Backcountry Wilderness Area and Douglas County.

Visit the DCOutdoors Facebook page (facebook.com/DCOutdoors) for updates on trail closures and information highlighting the county’s parks, trails and open space.
