Wyoming shocks CSU in opener

LAS VEGAS» All five Wyoming starters scored in double figures, led by Kwane Marble’s 20 points, and the Cowboys upset Colorado State 80-74 on Wednesday night in the first round of the Mountain West men’s basketball tournament.

Wyoming (8-23), which finished last in the the MW regular season, faces Nevada at 9:30 p.m. tonight in the quarterfin­als.

CSU (20-12) will now wait for more than a week to find out if it is selected for one of the secondary postseason tournament­s.

Jake Hendricks scored 16 points for Wyoming, Trevon Taylor added 15, Hunter Maldonado had 13 and A.J. Banks 10.

MW freshman of the year Isaiah Stevens scored 22 points to lead the Rams, who also got 20 points and 15 rebounds from senior center Nico Carvacho.

But no other Rams scored in double figures.

AIR FORCE 77, FRESNO ST. 70.

LAS VEGAS» A.J. Walker had a career-high 24 points as Air Force topped Fresno State in the first round of the Mountain West Tournament.

The No. 9 seed Falcons play top-seeded and fifth-ranked San Diego State in the quarterfin­als Thursday. The Aztecs won the only regular-season matchup between the teams 89-74.

Walker made 5-of-7 from 3point range. Lavelle Scottie added 21 points and Ryan Swan scored 12 for Air Force (12-19).

New Williams made six 3pointers and finished with 21 points for the Bulldogs (11-19). Nate Grimes added 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Noah Blackwell and Niven Hart each scored 13 points as well.

Grimes hit a 3-pointer to give Fresno State a 66-64 lead with 4:33 to play but the Bulldogs shot just 1-of-8 from there as Air Force scored 13 of the final 17 points.
