L AS VEGAS» main highway between Las Vegas and Reno reopened Friday, 10 hours after a predawn magnitude 6.5 earthquake that a researcher called the largest to strike the remote area of western Nevada in 65 years.

No injuries were reported, but officials said goods tumbled from market shelves, sidewalks heaved and storefront windows cracked shortly after 4 a.m. People from Salt Lake City to California’s Central Valley tweeted that they felt shaking.

Lights swayed at the governor’s mansion in Carson City, Gov. Steve Sisolak told reporters. “It woke me up, so it definitely had an impact,” he said.

Highway Patrol photos showed cracks on U.S. 95 before crews repaired them about 35 miles west of Tonopah.

Trump still confident in virus test despite false negatives. WASHING TON»

President Donald Trump expressed no concerns Friday about a rapid coronavirus test that the White House has been relying on to ensure his safety, despite new data suggesting the test may return an inordinate share of false negatives.

Trump expressed his confidence in the test from Abbott Laboratories after a preliminary study by New York University researchers reported problems with it. Trump and his deputies have promoted the 15-minute test as a “game changer” and have been using it for weeks to try to keep the White House complex safe.

The Food and Drug Administration announced late Thursday it was investigating preliminary data suggesting the Abbott test can miss a large number of COVID-19 cases, falsely clearing infected patients.

“Abbott is a great test; it’s a very quick test,” Trump said at a Rose Garden event to highlight his administration’s efforts to develop a vaccine for the virus.

Trump vows vaccine by end of year. President Donald Trump doubled down Friday on his promise to have a vaccine available by the end of the year, betting he can rally the pharmaceutical industry and the government to have one for nearly all Americans at a speed never before accomplished.

He made his pledge after the government’s senior medical leadership warned repeatedly this week that there was no assurance a safe vaccine would be available as fast as promised by the president or even for years.

Trump cast the rapid development of a vaccine as an important, but not essential, component of returning to normalcy.
