Rockies set 52-man player pool for shortened season

- By Patrick Saunders

The Rockies announced their player pool for their upcoming summer camp, or spring training 2.0 as some are calling it.

The roster is made up of the 39 players on Colorado’s 40-man roster as well as 13 additional players, all of whom attended 2020 spring training prior to the March 13 shutdown because of the coronavirus pandemic.

There are no surprise additions to the pool and none of the Rockies’ 2020 draft choices are included. However, veteran right-hander Ubaldo Jimenz, who was attempting a comeback during spring training, is not included in the pool. There are currently 28 pitchers on the pool roster.

Sunday marked the first major roster deadline of the shortened season, with all 30 teams submitting their player pools, up to a 60-man limit. The pool is the group of players who will be able to play for the team during the upcoming 60-game season.

Players are not eligible to participate in either summer camp or regular-season games until they are included in the pool. Teams are free to change the makeup of the pools as they see fit, through waiver claims, freeagent signings, releases and trades. However, players removed from a team’s 60-man (for reasons unrelated to injury, suspension, etc.) must be

exposed to other organizations via trade or waivers.

The Rockies eventually will select 30 players to make up the initial opening-day roster, while the remaining players will work out at another training site. For the Rockies, that will likely be at the team’s Triple-A Albuquerque site, although that has not been officially announced.

Players are scheduled to report to Coors Field on Wednesday, with Saturday likely the first day of summer camp practices, though the Rockies have not officially announced that.

When the regular season opens on July 23 or 24, teams will submit rosters of up to 30 players, with a minimum of 25. Two weeks later, those rosters will be trimmed to 28, then to 26 two weeks after that. Once teams are limited to a 26-man roster, they will be permitted to add a 27th player for doubleheaders.

There is no limitation on the number of pitchers allowed on the active roster this season.
