ONE DEAD AFTER FIGHT AT CHILD’S BIRTHDAY PARTY

A fight that started over a couple dancing at a 1-year-old’s birthday party ended with one dead, two wounded and a third man charged with first-degree murder.

Oscar Villegas-ortega, 21, was charged Friday with murder in connection with the June 27 shooting death of Fausto Marquez, 30, according to the Denver district attorney’s office. He also faces charges of possession of a weapon by a previous offender. Witnesses said the fight started because Villegas-ortega danced with the child’s mother, who is a cousin. Other men at the party became upset over their dancing, and a fight broke out, the affidavit said.

GREELEY» A 51-year-old man who police said sprayed officers with bear spray and shot at officers during a pursuit was arrested early Saturday morning, according to police. James Nicholson was arrested on suspicion of criminal attempt of firstdegre­e murder on a police officer, first-degree assault on a police officer, two counts of second-degree assault on a police officer and possession of a weapon by a previous offender.

Helicopter crash near Rifle hospitaliz­es two.

GARFIELD helicopter crashed near Rifle about 7 a.m. Saturday, sending two people to a hospital, according to the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office. The crash occurred near the city limits on Airport Road and caused a fire, which was contained, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

Police shoot, kill burglary suspect. DURANGO» Police shot and killed a burglary suspect who opened fire on an officer at an auto parts store. The Durango Herald reports police went to the store early Wednesday after being alerted by a security alarm. Police surrounded the store before the suspect shot at an officer through the glass front doors of the business. The officer returned fire, killing the suspect, a man in his 30s.

Businessma­n sentenced to prison for involvemen­t in black market marijuana organizati­on.

ARAPAHOE COUNTY» A California businessma­n described as the mastermind behind an illegal marijuana traffickin­g organizati­on was sentenced to 12 years in prison for conning people out of money and shipping drugs out of state. Scott Pack, 42, was sentenced Thursday by Arapahoe County District Judge Michael Spear on two counts under the Colorado Organized Crime Control Act.
