The Value of Lifelong Learning During Uncertain Times
As COVID-19 continues to change the face of education, institutions have been innovating to keep students engaged via online learning. But, these innovations aren’t just reaching traditional students; they are also reaching people of all ages to encourage a lifelong love of learning. Continued adult education allows students a chance to explore a wide range of subjects and interests without the pressures of exams, grades, or admission requirements. The benefits are myriad:
• Encourages new ideas and perspectives.
• Offers a chance to pursue personal and professional enrichment.
• Helps keep the brain developing as we age, reduces stress, renews self-motivation, improves selfconfidence, and more.
• Provides a sense of community and social connection.
All of these benefits become even more valuable in times of uncertainty and distancing, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Staying engaged and connected is a key part of making it through changes. Enter the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) and Enrichment Program at the University of Denver. OLLI is an organization of 3,400 lifelong learners ages 50-plus from around Denver. The Enrichment Program typically offers short courses throughout the year for the love of learning. While both traditionally teach in a face-to-face format, the programs shifted to online delivery in this summer and fall so all lifelong learners can engage from home. The Enrichment Program will offer more than 40 of its evening courses and lectures entirely online this fall to ensure the safety of both students and instructors. From classical music to the Beatles and iphone photography to lectures on current events, there is a course for every interest. Registration opens July 13. OLLI is now enrolling for its summer seminar series with topics ranging from Metropolitan Denver to comedy during a pandemic.
