Our White House is not a campaign prop

Re: “President accepts party’s nomination on massive stage at White House,” Aug. 28 news story

It was pretty unbelievable to watch the Republican National Convention, a political organization, and the president, hold President Donald Trump’s nomination acceptance speech on the White House lawn. That was an absolute abuse of power!

The White House has never before been used as a political tool of a sitting president and it should not have happened this time either. This man acts as if he believes he is a monarch. This cannot be allowed ever again.

The Republican National Convention appropriated White House venues, Fort McHenry, and the roof of the Hotel David in Jerusalem during a publicly funded trip for its political rally. Government employees gave political speeches from government venues.

The rally degraded the presidential pardon power and a naturalization ceremony, a foundational rite of citizenship, into a cheap trick to flaunt power.

White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, observed that flouting the law this way is all right, because no one outside the Beltway cares.

I live outside the Beltway. I care. The administration’s cynically illegal acts offend core principles of democracy.

The Republican Party claims to be a party of law and order. Respect for law and order does not consist of what you can get away with.

The press has largely shrugged off this hypocrisy, showing it doesn’t care and making it complicit in demeaning our institutions. Randy Livingston, Denver
