218 teams elect to play fall season, 58 others opt for spring schedule

The last- minute change in Colorado to allow for autumn and spring high school football seasons has resulted in nearly 80 percent of teams from across the state choosing to play this fall. The Colorado High School Activities Associatio­n released its updated prep football schedules Tuesday, from 6- man to Class 5A, with 218 schools selecting an autumn football season. A total of 58 teams will play in the spring. Complete team schedules for the fall season are available at CHSAA. com.

Schools playing in the fall are permitted to begin practice Thursday with games starting Oct. 8. CHSAA realigned the framework of its leagues to accommodat­e for teams not playing until spring. A quick breakdown from the state’s largest divisions.

Class 5A fall

North: Fairview, Fossil Ridge, Horizon, Legacy, Poudre, Rocky Mountain, Prairie View

Jeffco: Arvada West, Columbine, Lakewood, Mullen, Pomona, Ralston Valley

South: Chaparral, Doherty, Douglas County, Legend, Pine Creek, Regis Jesuit

Douglas County: Castle View, Highlands Ranch, Mountain Vista, Rock Canyon, ThunderRid­ge, Valor Christian

Centennial: Arapahoe, Cherokee Trail, Cherry Creek, Eaglecrest, Grandview, Smoky Hill, Overland

Class 4A fall

Northern 1: Brighton, Broomfield, Eerie, Heritage, Silver Creek, Windsor

Northern 2: Greeley West, Greeley Central, Longmont, Loveland, Monarch, Skyline

Jeffco: Bear Creek, Chatfield, Dakota Ridge, Golden, Standley Lake

Southern: Air Academy, FountainFo­rt Carson, Mesa Ridge, Pueblo West, Rampart, Vista Ridge

Western Slope: Cheyenne Mountain, Coronado, Liberty, Palmer, Thornton, Widefield

CHSAA did not formally announce which football teams have opted to play in the spring, however, the following programs were not included in its reorganize­d fall league structure.

5A spring: Adams City, Boulder, Denver East, Far Northeast, Fort Collins, Hinkley, Mountain Range, Northglenn, Rangeview, Westminste­r ( 10)

4A spring: Aurora Central, Centaurus, Denver South, Gateway, Vista Peak, Falcon ( 6)
