Not Nobel material

-

Nominating President Donald Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize? Good grief. The Nobel Peace Prize committee gets deluged with all kinds of questionable nominations every year that never have a chance to be considered for actually receiving it. Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini have all been nominated, as have Gandhi and Mother Teresa.

Trump’s reputation for divisiveness on the world stage does not bode well for a win, although there are no specific criteria for being nominated. Trump was nominated by a foreign government official of an extreme right- wing group. The nomination was apparently for creating an opportunity for Middle East peace, of which he himself did little of the actual work. A major disqualification for his winning the award is his disregard for climate change and his administration’s heavy- handed rollbacks on environmental protections. On the world stage, a climate- change denier is an evil not to be ignored. Furthermore, his lapdog relationship with the murderous Vladimir Putin does not bode well for a win. But hey, it’s 2020.

Trump just wants the prize because President Barack Obama won one. Nothing would damage the reputation of the Prize more than giving it to Trump, sort of like when Trump gave the Medal of Freedom to Rush Limbaugh. In a world where there are literally dozens of leaders deserving to win the Prize, self- promoting stable geniuses need not apply.
