ALBECK, LONGTIME NBA COACH, DIES AT 89

SAN ANTONIO» Stan Albeck, the former San Antonio, Cleveland, New Jersey and Chicago head coach during a long NBA career, died Thursday in hospice care at son John’s home. He was 89.

Albeck coached the ABA’s Denver Rockets in 1970-71 then directed Cleveland in 1979-80, San Antonio from 1980-83, New Jersey from 198385 and Chicago in 1985-86 — with Michael Jordan in his second season.

He took San Antonio to consecutiv­e Western Conference Finals in 1982 and 1983. The Spurs had a moment of silence to honor Albeck before their game against the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday night.

NCAA hires law firm to assess gender equity at championsh­ips.

INDIANAPOL­IS» Under sharp criticism during its marquee March Madness tournament­s, the NCAA said Thursday it is hiring a law firm to review potential gender equity issues related to how it conducts its men’s and women’s championsh­ip events.

Seahawks bring back Dunlap, add Hyder.

RENTON, WASH.» Less than three weeks after being released in a salary cap move, Carlos Dunlap is returning to the Seattle Seahawks on a two-year deal. Earlier Thursday, the team officially announced the signing of free agent defensive end Kerry Hyder Jr.

Washington signs WR Humphries.

ASHBURN, VA.» Washington signed Adam Humphries to a one-year contract Thursday, a month after the oft-injured wide receiver was released by Tennessee. Injuries limited Humphries to just 19 games over the past two seasons with the Titans.

Patriots re-sign RB White.

BOSTON»

The Patriots have re-signed running back James White, bringing back a key veteran cog of their offense. The deal is for one year and according to reports will pay him a guaranteed $2.5 million, returning White to New England for his eighth season.

Bills agree to sign RB Breida.

N.Y.» The Buffalo Bills

ORCHARD PARK, agreed to sign running back Matt Breida to a one-year contract Thursday. Breida has four years of NFL experience and was a free agent after spending last season with the Miami Dolphins. He was limited to 254 yards rushing and 96 receiving in 12 games, including one start.

Cardinals bolster secondary with CB Butler.

TEMPE, ARIZ.» The Arizona Cardinals added cornerback Malcolm Butler on a one-year deal in an effort to bolster a thin secondary and also traded center Mason Cole to the Minnesota Vikings for a sixth-round draft pick.

Orioles add Harvey to major league roster.

SARASOTA, FLA.» Matt Harvey is back in the major leagues with the Baltimore Orioles. Baltimore selected the contract of the 31-year-old right-hander on Thursday, one week before its season opener at Boston. Harvey gets a $1 million, one-year contract.

Wie West struggles in return to LPGA Tour.

CARLSBAD, CALIF.» Michelle Wie West struggled through a round of 9-over 81 in her first tournament in nearly two years, while Inbee Park shot a 6-under 66 to take the first-round lead Thursday in the Kia Classic at Aviara.

Tampa Bay Rays reliever Nick Anderson has a partially torn ligament in his pitching elbow and likely will be sidelined beyond the All-Star break, a person familiar with the right-hander’s injury told The Associated Press.
