Editorial “an exercise in character assassination”

Re: “Horrific allegations against Tay Anderson,” June 6 editorial

Your editorial was, for a major newspaper, particularly chilling. You write that Tay Anderson is accused, second hand, by people who claim to have the names of scores of women who were “victimized” by Denver Public School Board Member Tay Anderson. You seem to have forgotten that the use of unnamed accusers has a particularly sordid history in America.

Strangely you also tell us that, “It does not appear at this time that any victims have spoken to the police.” And, “No criminal charges have been filed.” Does The Denver Post actually believe that there is no one who is willing to bring charges against Anderson for his alleged prolific misdeeds?

Although you further write that an investigation should be conducted and the victims should come forward, you have, in effect, decided that there is only one side to this story. You operate on the assumption that Anderson is such an overwhelmingly dangerous sexual predator that he should not attend remote school board meetings or set foot on DPS property. Though just how this will increase the security of women in Denver is unclear.

If Anderson is the sexual monster that you imply, then it should be easy to obtain ample evidence which will stand the scrutiny of our court system and Anderson will go to prison. But if there isn’t, then what you have written is based on hearsay and innuendo, which makes it nothing more than an exercise in character assassination.
