Fangio pleased with team’s 11-on-11 work

- By Ryan O’Halloran

For their seventh organized team activity workout, the Broncos introduced 11-on-11 drills for the first time Monday.

“We had just about 20 plays of ‘team,’ and obviously, it was really good for the (offensive and defensive) lines to get involved and really good for the defense to have to figure out if it was a run or pass,” coach Vic Fangio said. “It was great work. I was pleased with it.”

In 11-on-11, quarterbacks Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewater threw one interception apiece.

The football slipped out of Lock’s hand during his throwing motion and was caught by outside linebacker Malik Reed. Bridgewater’s

deep pass was intercepted by rookie safety Jamar Johnson.

Bridgewater’s first pass was a touchdown to receiver Jerry Jeudy, who later made a contested catch along the sideline against rookie cornerback Kary Vincent.

In a pass-only drill minus linemen, Lock was intercepted by safety Justin Simmons.

“I think it’s too early to come to any conclusions one way or the other, even a small conclusion,” Fangio said when asked about Lock.

Lock, who Fangio said was fighting a blister on his throwing hand, appeared unsteady.

“You don’t want guys pressing,” Fangio said. “Two players you don’t want as coaches — one that doesn’t do anything the coaches tell them to do and, two, ones that only do what the coaches tell them to do. There’s a fine line of moving on and seeing more than what you’re schooled to see. You have to find that happy medium.”

Fangio on vaccinations.

Fangio estimated “69-70” of the Broncos’ 90 players have been vaccinated or said they will soon get the shot.

“I don’t think we’ll get all 90, but hopefully we’ll get as many as we can for a couple of reasons,” Fangio said. “One, for me personally and I know everybody has their personal opinion, but I think it’s the right thing to do medically. Two, I think it will have a positive effect on the team, from an operational standpoint.”

Fuller makes appearance. New cornerback Kyle Fuller made his OTA debut after opting to train away from the facility the last two weeks.

Nearly 20 players did not participate in the workout, including receiver Tim Patrick (hamstring) and tight end Noah Fant (wisdom teeth pulled over the weekend).

Side-field work: Patrick, receiver KJ Hamler (hamstring), offensive tackle Calvin Anderson, center Patrick Morris, running back Damarea Crockett, linebacker Jonathon Cooper, nose tackle Mike Purcell (foot) and cornerback Duke Dawson (knee).

Not spotted: Left tackle Garett Bolles (personal reasons), right tackle Bobby Massie (pectoral strain), safety Kareem Jackson, cornerback Ronald Darby, running back Melvin Gordon, outside linebacker Bradley Chubb (ankle) and inside linebackers Baron Browning (lower leg) and Josh Watson. Defensive end Shelby Harris continues to sit out workouts.

James’ busy day. A league source confirmed former Broncos right tackle Ja’Wuan James has filed a grievance through the NFLPA against the team seeking his full salary despite tearing his Achilles while training away from the facility.

And, per ESPN, James agreed to a two-year contract with the Baltimore Ravens that includes $500,000 guaranteed this year for his rehab.
