Five people were arrested in connection with Sunday’s CONCACAF Nations League final in which the United States beat Mexico, 3-2, at Empower Field at Mile High.

According to Denver police, four people were arrested for trespassing and another for throwing projectiles during the game. The latter was identified via security footage after injuring an American player, according to the stadium management company. That person has also been banned from attending future events at the stadium.

“While the night showcased Denver as a world-class soccer destination and Empower Field at Mile High as a premiere sports and entertainment venue, the actions of a few patrons unfortunately took away from a memorable event,” the stadium management company said in a statement.

American midfielder Giovanni Reyna was hit in the face with an object from the crowd amid the team’s celebration of Christian Pulisic’s goal on a penalty kick in the 114th minute as fans rained cups and water bottles onto the field.

Several others were ejected due to violations of the fan code of conduct, stadium officials said.

Play was also halted during the championship match after homophobic chants from the crowd rang out in the stadium. It wasn’t the first time it had happened during the weekend. The same chant broke out during Thursday’s semifinal match between Mexico and Costa Rica. Security had “ejected several fans for discriminatory language after warnings were made on the PA system,” CONCACAF tweeted.

“Empower Field at Mile High is fully committed to providing a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for all participants and fans,” the stadium management company said in a statement. “Our fan code of conduct will continue to be strictly enforced to ensure a positive experience for everyone.”
