NBA FINES EMBIID $35K FOR GAME 6 ALTERCATIO­N

PHILADELPH­IA» Philadelph­ia 76ers center Joel Embiid was fined $35,000 by the NBA for escalating an oncourt altercatio­n in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals against Atlanta.

Embiid fell on top of John Collins on the court in Game 6. Collins then shoved Embiid before both rose to their feet. Embiid had his arms stretched out wide with Collins’ hands around his neck as both walked off the court under the basket.

Officials reviewed the altercatio­n and called technical fouls on each player with no free throws awarded.

The NBA said Sunday Embiid also failed to comply with an NBA Security interview following the incident.

Walls wins Denver Men’s City Amateur in playoff.

The Denver City Amateur golf tournament finished with a one-hole playoff with Glenn Walls, of Castle Rock, defeating Roger Nakagawa, of Denver, to win the championsh­ip after Nakagawa lipped out a putt. Both players shot a threeunder two-day total of 137.

Four players followed at 138, including former Champ Adam Neville of Denver.

Other flight winners include: first flight – Steve Ingersoll (149); second flight – Vince Plaskey (149); third flight – Russell Newton (155); fourth flight – Brian Gaul (152); and, fifth flight – Doug Johnson (177).

Springs runner wins 5th Mountain Washington road race.

PINKHAM

NOTCH, N.H.» Joseph Gray, the reigning World Mountain Running Champion, raced to the top of the tallest mountain in the Northeast to collect his fifth Mount Washington Road Race victory.

Gray, 37, of Colorado Springs, led from the start to the finish at the 6,288-foot summit, finishing the grueling race with a time of 1 hour, 1 minute and 40 seconds.

Liberty beat sparks.

LOS ANGELES» Rebecca Allen scored a season-high 19 points, Sami Whitcomb added 17 and the New York Liberty held on for a 76-73 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks in what was billed as “The ’97 Game” by the WNBA.

The league, which is celebratin­g its 25th season this year, held the matchup nearly 24 years to the day of the first game, which was also won by the Liberty on June 21, 1997, at the Great Western Forum.

Italian reserves beat Wales.

ROME» Italy’s Roberto Mancini has been saying for weeks that all 26 members of his squad are starters. And after beating Wales 1-0 despite making eight changes to his starting lineup at the European Championsh­ip, it’s hard to argue with him.

BAKU, AZERBAIJAN» Xherdan Shaqiri scored two goals to give Switzerlan­d a 3-1 victory over Turkey and a likely place in the round of 16 at the European Championsh­ip.

Lewis Hamilton’s wish for a closer Formula One title fight is coming true. And Max Verstappen looks like a rival who will take some stopping, judging by his impressive win at the French Grand Prix. It was Verstappen’s second win in three races, and extended his lead over Hamilton to 12 points.

Transgende­r weightlift­er to compete at olympics.

WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND» Laurel Hubbard hefted 628 pounds in two lifts on the way to qualifying in the women’s superheavy­weight division for the Tokyo Olympics. Hubbard is set to become the first transgende­r athlete to compete at an Olympic Games.

Korda wins LPGA.

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH.» Nelly Korda became the first two-time winner on the LPGA Tour this season, closing with a 5-under 67 for a two-stroke victory in the Meijer LPGA Classic.
