Gray surpasses Jimenez for 2nd place in club career strikeouts

- By Mike Chambers

Rockies starter Jon Gray climbed the club strikeout ranks Sunday.

The right-hander fanned Zach Mckinstry to end the Dodgers’ third inning, posting the 774th strikeout of his career — moving him one ahead of Ubaldo Jimenez for second place in club history.

Gray, who allowed just six hits and two runs, struck out seven on the day to get to 779 for his career.

Jorge De La Rosa owns the Rockies record with 985.

“I’m blessed to have that opportunity,” Gray said postgame. “I know it’s a while to catch De La but I’ll be ready and looking forward to it. It’s an incredible honor (to surpass Jimenez). I’m just happy.”

Gray enjoyed his longest outing of the season. He lowered his ERA at Coors Field to 3.14 (57.1 IP, 20 ER) this season. He has a 4.54 ERA on the road.

“I just seem to attack the strike zone more,” Gray said of pitching at Coors Field. “The troubles that come with pitching a core skill, and I kind of eliminate those. So I tred to limit walks today. I walked a couple of guys (two) but luckily got out. I think I’m overall more aggressive. I think I’ve got to bring it on the road more often.”

Blackmon and Bichette. Charlie Blackmon’s walk-off home run Sunday was his second of the season, and third walk-off hit. He joins Dante Bichette in 1996 as the only players in club history with three walk-off hits in the same year.
