RAPIDS, SPORTING K.C. TIE IN WESTERN SHOWDOWN

KANSAS CITY, KAN.» Colorado’s Jonathan Lewis and Sporting Kansas City’s Jonny Russell scored first-half goals in a 1-1 tie Saturday night in a showdown between two of the top teams in the Western Conference.

Lewis scored in the 17th minute for Colorado (11-4-5) after a defender blocked his initial shot in the box. Kansas City (11-4-7) tied it when Russell bent in a free kick from just above the circle in the 41st minute.

In the 88th minute a sliding Russell got his foot on the ball, but defender Austin Trusty cleared if off the line, depriving Sporting KC a chance to move into a first-place tie with Seattle.

In stoppage time, Cole Bassett hit the cross bar from tight quarters, which would have allowed the thirdplace Rapids to leapfrog Kansas City.

Colorado paralympia­n Herzog gets a bronze. Sophia Herzog of Fairplay won a bronze medal in the women’s 100m breaststro­ke at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games with a final time of 1:36.06. In 2016, she won silver in the same event in Rio.

“This last year was really hard just to train and have consistenc­y so I am super-ecstatic,” Herzog said.

Herzog was born with a form of dwarfism known as achondropl­asia. She will compete in the women’s 50m butterfly on Monday.

Scott’s family finally gets his trophy. DAYTONA BEACH, FLA.» Wendell Scott’s grandson stood on his tippy toes, leaned over and kissed the trophy that was nearly 60 years in the making. NASCAR presented Scott’s family a custom trophy commemorat­ing his historic 1963 Jacksonvil­le victory prior to Saturday’s Cup Series race at Daytona Internatio­nal Speedway. Scott was the first and remains the only Black driver to win a race at NASCAR’S top level.

Grizzlies waive Rondo. MEMPHIS, TENN.» The Memphis Grizzlies have waived veteran guard Rajon Rondo.

The Grizzlies announced the move after acquiring Rondo on Aug. 16 in a deal that sent guard Eric Bledsoe to the Los Angeles Clippers for Rondo, Patrick Beverly and center Daniel Oturu.

Arsenal off to its worst start.

Carolina makes offer to Kotkaniemi. The Hurricanes tendered an offer sheet to Canadiens restricted free agent Jesperi Kotkaniemi, a response to Montreal trying to poach Carolina’s Sebastian Aho two years ago. Kotkaniemi signed the offer sheet for $6.1 million for next season.

Langer needed birdie to keep share of lead.

GRAND BLANC, MICH.» Bernhard Langer birdied the final hole for a 6-under 66 and a share of the second-round lead with Doug Barron at 14-under 130 in The Ally Challenge.

Essential Quality wins Travers Stakes.

American shares lead of European Masters.

CRANS-MONTANA, SWITZERLAN­D» American Sean Crocker shot a 6-under 64 to share the lead after the third round of the European Masters. Crocker had six birdies and an eagle-3 at the 14th to finish on 10 under alongside Renato Paratore.
