AVON HAS SPENT $95K ON RECALL SO FAR
For over a year, the town of Avon has been engaged with the Avon Recall Committee over an effort to recall Mayor Sarah Smith Hymes and Council member Tamra Underwood.
Throughout the process, the town has incurred expenses. To date, it has spent $80,011 in legal expenses on the recall, as well as an estimated $10,000 to $15,000 of staff time, and expects to spend $10,000 on the upcoming coordinated election Nov. 2.
In addition, a written report to the town council states other expenses could be forthcoming, including general legal expenses “related to the conduct of the recall election in accordance with the District Court order and in accordance with municipal recall election laws.”
Teen receives life in prison in killing.
A teenager who shot and killed another teen, a standout rugby player at Cherokee Trail High School, during a vape juice robbery has been sentenced to life in prison.
Demarea Mitchell, 19, of Aurora, was sentenced Wednesday, with the possibility of parole after 40 years, for the May 8, 2019, death of Lloyd Chavez IV, according to the Arapahoe County District Attorney’s Office. Chavez, 18 at the time, was shot outside his Centennial home.
A jury on July 16 found Mitchell guilty of murder, attempted aggravated robbery and conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery, according to a news release.
Arapahoe County District Court Judge Ben Leutwyler sentenced Mitchell. Co-defendant Kenneth Gallegos was sentenced in June to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 40 years.
Husband arrested on murder charges in wife’s death.
A Jefferson County man was arrested Friday as a suspect in the November shooting death of his wife.
Scott Lee Smith, 46, is being held at the Jefferson County Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder, according to a sheriff’s office news release.
On Nov. 1, deputies responded to the 5400 block of West Ottawa Avenue when Smith called authorities and said that he shot his wife, Kanokwan Smith, 48, when she came at him with a weapon, the release said. Kanokwan Smith was found dead inside their residence.
Smith was booked on a first-degree murder charge at the time of the shooting, but was released because of a lack of evidence at the time.
Loveland nurse practitioner faces fine.
A Loveland family nurse practitioner faces a fine after failing to comply with a cease-anddesist order instructing him to stop illegally marketing and overstating the effectiveness of alleged COVID-19 cures and treatments.
Siegfried Emme, owner of Loveland Medical Clinic, will pay $20,000 if he complies with a consent judgment filed with the Larimer County District Court on Thursday, Colorado Attorney General
Phil Weiser said in a news release.
In March of 2020, Emme advertised “therapies as a treatment for the coronavirus and later began advertising other treatments he claimed were cures on his social media and blog while overstating their effectiveness,” the release said. The AG’S office sent a cease-and-desist notice to Emme in November.
