WILDFIRE ERUPTS WEST OF DURANGO

A wildfire was burning in the Perins Peak area just west of Durango.

The Perins Peak fire, burning near County Road 204 and the Rockridge neighborho­od, was sending up a large column of smoke. The plume was visible throughout Durango.

A pre-evacuation notice was issued for County Road 206 to Colorado 160, and County Road 208 and the Rockridge and Dry Dock subdivisio­ns.

The fire started at about 4:45 and it has burned about 71 acres, moving through heavy timber and oak brush, according to Durango Fire Rescue. The fire is burning on Bureau of Land Management lands.

Jan. 6 riot suspect arrested in Brighton.

A Maryland man was arrested Tuesday morning in Brighton for allegedly assaulting officers and a news media member during the Jan. 6 breach at the U.S. Capitol.

Rodney Kenneth Milstreed, 55, of Finksburg, Md., is charged with a criminal complaint in Washington, D.C., on suspicion of assaulting, resisting or impeding officers with a dangerous weapon, civil disorder, obstructio­n of an official proceeding, simple assault, and other related offenses, according to a U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Columbia, news release.

Milstreed made an initial court appearance Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Denver, according to the release.

On Jan. 6, 2021, Milstreed allegedly picked up what appeared to be a flagpole and “threw it, javelinsty­le, in the direction” of officers, striking one officer, according to the release. He is also accused of throwing a smoke grenade at officers and of assaulting a media member who was wearing a lanyard displaying credential­s and was carrying a camera.

Social media accounts show that Milstreed communicat­ed with others while he was on the U.S. Capitol grounds, according to the release. Among other posts, the suspect allegedly sent photos of blood on the floor in what appears to be the Upper West Plaza and later added, “Man I’ve never seen anything like this. I feel so alive.”

Three days later, on Jan. 9, 2021, Milstreed messaged a Facebook associate to describe his participat­ion in the violence and his intention to “crack some heads” while he was there, the release said.

Milstreed was arrested at about 5 a.m. Tuesday at a hotel, according to Brighton police.

Officer who fired at suspect identified.

A Colorado Springs police officer who fired at a homicide suspect has been identified.

Officer Brandon Lowe fired at least one shot at the suspect, Osemeke Uwadibie, 31, on May 13 when Uwadibie allegedly attacked Lowe, according to police.

Uwadibie was being held on investigat­ion of first-degree murder in the stabbing death of 59-year-old Charles Slabaugh.

Lowe was responding to a felony menacing report in the 200 block of East Arvada Street when he encountere­d Uwadibie coming out of an apartment and Uwadibie allegedly assaulted Lowe, who fired at the suspect.

Uwadibie then allegedly stole Lowe’s patrol vehicle, leading police in a chase on Interstate 25 before crashing and being arrested, according to police. Slabaugh’s body was found inside the apartment Uwadibie allegedly fled.

Man sentenced to 32 years for murder.

A man who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for a March 2020 shooting death in Aurora has been sentenced to prison.

Octavis Styles, 26, was sentenced Monday to 32 years in prison, according to the Adams County District Attorney’s Office. Styles pleaded guilty March 18 for the death of 22-year-old Surajadin Mohamed Ahmed.

On March 21, 2020, Styles and Thomas Boles went to Ahmed’s home, at the Windsor Court Apartments in the 10900 block of East 16th Avenue, to purchase marijuana, according to a DA’S news release. Styles and Boles brandished handguns and threatened other people in the residence, and Styles fired three shots through a door, which struck Ahmed. Styles and Boles grabbed several large bags of marijuana and fled.

Ahmed was hit in the back, stomach and leg. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

In December 2020, Styles was arrested in Florida and extradited to Colorado to face trial.

Boles, the co-defendant, previously pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery, menacing a victim with a deadly weapon, and was sentenced to 19 years in prison.
