Superintendent needs support in his decisions

- — Mark Zaitz, Denver

Re: “Plan to close schools rejected,” Nov. 18 news story I’m writing as a retired teacher and elementary principal as well as a proud and steadfast liberal Democrat. Closing low- enrolled elementary schools is essential at this time for Denver Public Schools. And for school board members, after hiring Alex Marrero to do exactly what a strong and compassionate leader is entrusted to do, undermining him in such an embarrassing way for both parties is seriously detrimental. And that’s critical because DPS needs the support of parents and nonparents to believe that competent people are in charge at this time for Denver children.

I understand all the factors involved as we waste money staffing and maintaining low- enrolled buildings.

And if these buildings are not air- conditioned, it’d be great to vacate them as soon as possible as well.

You don’t waste money at a time of declining enrollment, heightened need to maximize classroom support for those most in need, and inflation that will add operating costs in every area. Each day school administrators are met with challenging issues brought by students, parents and community members.

Closing schools creates the anxiety of uncertainty and change. Very understandable.

But we do know that children endure school change because of moving and graduation each year. Marrero and every school board member need to articulate clearly the logistics and budgets of elementary schools and why these changes are essential. If they can’t, greater harm is ahead for this thriving but challenged urban school district.
