Alabama becomes only 2nd team to beat 2 No. 1s in a season

HOUSTON >> No. 8 Alabama rallied from a 15- point second half deficit to stun No. 1 Houston 71- 65 on Saturday, becoming just the second team to beat two top- ranked teams in the same season.

Noah Clowney had 16 points and 11 rebounds, Jaden Bradley added 12 points and Mark Sears scored 11 points, including nine in the second half for the Tide ( 8- 1).

Alabama shot 50% from the field in the second half and 41% for the game. The Tide went 20 of 32 on free throws, including 15 of 21 in the second half.

The Crimson Tide beat North Carolina 103- 101 in four overtimes on Nov. 27 and joins the 1990 Oklahoma team to take down two No. 1s in a season.

No. 2 Texas 88, Ark.- Pine Bluff 43

AUSTIN, TEXAS >> Christian Bishop scored 16 points and Texas held ArkansasPi­ne Bluff to 13 points in the second half while coasting to a win.

Texas rose to its highest ranking in more than a decade after a 6- 0 start before dropping an overtime loss against No. 17 Illinois earlier in the week in New York City.

Freshman Dillon Mitchell scored 13 points for Texas ( 7- 1), most of them coming on dunks.

No. 4 Purdue 65, Nebraska 62, OT

LINCOLN, NEB. >> Fletcher Loyer scored a seasonhigh 22 points and Braden Smith made four free throws in the last 28 seconds of overtime to give Purdue a hardearned victory over Nebraska.

The Boilermake­rs ( 100, 2- 0 Big Ten) have won two straight to open conference play for the first time since 2017- 18.

No. 5 Uconn 114, Long Island 61

STORRS, CONN. >> Freshman Donovan Clingan had a career- high 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead Uconn over Long Island University.

It was Clingan’s second double- double of the season, and he was one of five Uconn players who scored in double digits.

No. 6 Kansas 95, Missouri 67

COLUMBIA, MO. >> Jalen Wilson had 24 points and 10 rebounds, K. J. Adams Jr. scored a career- high 19 and Kansas routed Missouri in the Jayhawks’ first visit to their old Big 12 rival in more than a decade. Kevin Mccullar Jr. contribute­d 21 points for the Jayhawks ( 9- 1), who were making their first trip to Columbia since 2012, when Missouri departed for the SEC.

No. 9 Arkansas 88, Oklahoma 78

TULSA, OKLA. >> Ricky Council IV scored 26 points and Nick Smith Jr. had 21 in Arkansas’ victory over Oklahoma.

Arkansas, which improved to 9- 1 on the season, led by three at the break and gradually pulled away from the Sooners throughout the second half.

No. 10 Arizona 89, No. 14 Indiana 75

LAS VEGAS>> Azuolas Tubelis scored 21 points and No. 10 Arizona defeated No. 14 Indiana 89- 75 in the Vegas Clash.

The Wildcats ( 8- 1) held off Indiana’s surge after their lead was trimmed to 59- 56 on consecutiv­e 3- pointers by the Hoosiers midway through the second half.

Memphis 82, No. 11 Auburn 73

ATLANTA >> Kendric Davis scored a season- high 27 points and Memphis ended Auburn’s seasonopen­ing eight- game win streak.

The closest Auburn ( 81) got was an eight- point deficit on K. D. Johnson’s free throws with 3: 04 left in the game.

No. 15 Duke 82, Md.Eastern Shore 55

DURHAM, N. C. >> Tyrese Proctor and Dariq Whitehead each scored 15 points and Duke rolled past Maryland- Eastern Shore while using an allfreshma­n starting lineup for the first time in program history.

No. 16 Kentucky 69, Yale 59

LEXINGTON, KY. >> Oscar Tshiebwe scored 28 points and had 12 rebounds to lead Kentucky over Yale.

The Wildcats ( 7- 2) pushed their winning streak to four games in a tougher- than- expected contest against the Bulldogs ( 8- 3) from the Ivy League.

Penn State 74, No. 17 Illinois 59

CHAMPAIGN, ILL. >> Andrew Funk and Myles Dread combined for 11 3- pointers to help Penn State beat Illinois. Funk and Jalen Pickett led all scorers with 20 points each to give the Nittany Lions their first road Big Ten win against a top- 20 team since beating No. 16 Michigan State in 2020.

Saint Mary’s 68, No. 22 San Diego St. 61

PHOENIX >> Aidan Mahaney scored 20 points, Alex Ducas added 17 and Saint Mary’s knocked off San Diego State in the Jerry Colangelo Classic.

WOMEN Notre Dame’s Miles sets triple- double mark over Merrimack

SOUTH BEND, IND.>> Olivia Miles became the first Notre Dame player with three career triple- doubles as the No. 5 Fighting Irish overwhelme­d Merrimack 108- 44 on Saturday.

Miles, who last March became the first freshman, male or female, to record a triple- double in an NCAA Tournament game, finished with 13 points, 13 rebounds and 14 assists.

No. 15 Utah 76, BYU 59

PROVO, UTAH>> Alissa Pili hit 13 of 18 shots from the floor and scored 28 points to lead Utah over in- state rival BYU in the 110th meeting between the schools. Utah now leads the all- time series, 68- 42.

No. 18 Creighton 75, Drake 71

OMAHA, NEB. >> Morgan Maly scored a career- high 24 points and Creighton held off Drake. Maly sank 9 of 16 shots and four 3- pointers, adding six rebounds for the Bluejays ( 8- 1), who snapped a fourgame skid against the Bulldogs ( 5- 3).

S. Dakota St. 82, No. 24 Kansas St. 78

KANSAS CITY>> Myah Selland scored nine of her 20 points in the fourth quarter, and South Dakota State held off Kansas State. South Dakota State ( 6- 4) never trailed after the first quarter.

No. 25 Villanova 82, Saint Joseph’s 59

PHILADELPH­IA>> Maddy Siegrist scored 31 points, the 20th time she has scored at least 30, and Villanova used a hot start to roll to a win over Big Five rival Saint Joseph’s.
