Longtime Colorado Department of Corrections staffer Moses “Andre” Stancil has been appointed the department’s executive director.

Stancil, who has been serving as interim executive director for DOC since December, was appointed Tuesday by Gov. Jared Polis.

“It is the honor of my career to be selected as the DOC executive director,” Stancil said in a governor’s office news release. “I began my career over 24 years ago working as an entry level corrections officer at DOC, and I am honored to continue the important work serving the people of Colorado and supporting the thousands of dedicated DOC staff members who help protect public safety every day.”

Stancil previously served as DOC deputy executive director from February 2022 to November, and he served as DOC’S deputy executive director of prison operations from 2019 to 2022. Stancil worked in the Federal Bureau of Prisons in multiple roles from 1998 to 2019.

“Andre has been a dedicated member of the Federal Bureau of Prisons team and now the Colorado Department of Corrections for many years, and we are thrilled that he will bring his expertise and commitment to this critical role,” Polis said.

“We look forward to continuing our work to make Colorado one of the 10 safest states in the country in the next five years working closely with Andre at the helm of DOC.”

Stancil began his career as a correctional officer with the DOC and ser ved in the Army as a military police investigator. He earned a master’s degree in criminology in 2009 and a bachelor’s degree in behavioral science, both from Regis University.

The appointment requires state Senate confirmation.
