Broncos let DC Evero out of his contract, likely ending time here

- By Parker Gabriel pgabriel@ denverpost. com

Ejiro Evero’s time in Denver is likely coming to an end.

The up- and- coming defensive coordinator is being let out of his contract by new Broncos head coach Sean Payton and is free to explore other opportunities if he doesn’t land a head coaching job, sources confirmed to The Post.

Evero and former Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett are close and Evero turned down the interim head coaching job after Hackett was fired with two games left in the season. Not only that, but Evero interviewed for the head coaching job that Payton eventually landed. Returning to coach a talented defense for a second year and burnish his head coaching resume may have had some pull for Evero, but he also has a year of immediate success already under his belt. He will be a hot commodity on the coordinator market if he doesn’t get a head coaching job. The Minnesota Vikings are known to have an interest in talking to Evero about their defensive coordinator position.

Evero, 42, first talked with Payton about his status Wednesday and had conversations the past few days, sources told The Post.

Payton has requested defensive coordinator interviews with at least two men so far: Pittsburgh linebackers coach Brian Flores and Seattle defensive assistant Sean Desai, sources said.

Evero made his mark in his first year in Denver. Players raved about his leadership ability as often as his football acumen.

“I think he’s the best,” inside linebacker Alex Singleton said. “How he knows football and understands football is bar none, and then the way he understands each player and being able to use their abilities to fit into the scheme and tweaking it.”

Evero interviewed for all five head coach openings in the NFL this winter.

LANDOW MOVING ON>> Payton is expected to bring in his own coaching staff and he will also hire his own strength coach, as well.

Loren Landow, the Broncos’ head strength coach the past five seasons, is moving on, a source confirmed Saturday to The Post.

It’s not uncommon for incoming head coaches to bring in a strength coach they’re familiar with, though Landow worked for three regimes in Denver. Landow was hired in March 2018 and worked for head coaches Vance Joseph, Vic Fangio and Hackett.

Landow, who founded and owns Landow Performance in Centennial, has nearly three decades of experience in the strength- andconditioning world and works with many NFL players in the offseason outside of the Broncos’ facility.
