CU, CSU extend new student enrollment deadline

- By Olivia Doak

BOULDER>> The University of Colorado and Colorado State University will extend their enrollment confirmation date from May 1 to June 1 for first-year students admitted for fall 2024 because of delays with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid forms.

The enrollment confirmation date is the deadline by which accepted students must confirm whether they plan to enroll in the fall. After confirming, students can apply for housing and sign up for orientation and class registration.

“It is critical for students and their families to know that CU Boulder remains committed to supporting them through the financial aid process,” Amy Hutton, associate vice chancellor for enrollment management, said in a release. “By extending the confirmation deadline, we intend to provide ample time for all students — especially those from Colorado and who are first-generation or have financial need — to gather and assess all information needed to make important decisions about their future education.”

“As a land-grant institution, we remain committed to our mission of access and inclusion,” said CSU Executive Director of Admissions Heather Daniels said in a news release. “Those core values guide CSU and our belief in the transformational power of education. We are dedicated to supporting our future Rams through this time. For many students, knowing exactly what financial aid they will be receiving is a major consideration in the decision-making process. We have extended this date to offer families as much time as possible to make their decision.”

Both universities decided to extend the deadline from May 1 to June 1 in response to FAFSA delays. The Department of Education announced Jan. 30 that higher education institutions would not begin to receive students’ FAFSA data until midmarch. Without this data, the universities can’t begin processing financial aid offers for current or prospective students.

CU’S priority housing deadline also will be extended to June 5. CU will communicate any further changes to timelines and processes directly to current and prospective students by posting to the Office of Financial Aid’s financial aid timeline webpage at colorado.edu/financialaid/.

CU said its extension is subject to reevaluation should there be further delays to the FAFSA process. The extension applies to this year only and will return to May 1 next year barring any significant impacts.
