Address the source of immigration
Re: “Denver’s cuts to parks, DMV for the refugee crisis are imprudent,” Feb. 21 editorial
It’s evident that Denver, like many other cities across the United States, will continue to see a steady flow of asylum seekers and the challenges it poses to local resources. Mayor Mike Johnston’s decision to implement cuts to essential services underscores the urgent need for comprehensive solutions. However, one effective strategy to alleviate this strain is to support foreign aid and development initiatives.
Foreign aid plays a pivotal role in addressing the root causes of migration by fostering economic stability and creating opportunities in migrants’ home countries. By investing in education, health care, infrastructure, and job training programs abroad, foreign aid empowers individuals and communities to build sustainable livelihoods, reducing the need for migration and promoting regional stability. As the article alluded to, the broken immigration system is leaving officials at the state and local levels to try to rectify something that requires a broader, international effort.
I urge Sens. Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper to prioritize the protection of the International Affairs Budget, which supports vital initiatives aimed at promoting global stability and security. This budget addresses humanitarian crises, environmental challenges, hunger and global health issues. By safeguarding this funding, we can demonstrate our commitment to fostering a safer, more prosperous world while addressing the immediate needs of asylum seekers and refugees in our communities.
