Scott scores 18; CSU beats San Jose State in MWC Tournament

LAS VEGAS>> Joel Scott had 18 points in Colorado State’s 72-62 victory against San Jose State on Wednesday night in the Mountain West Conference Tournament.

Seventh-seeded Colorado State will play No. 2 seed Nevada on Thursday in the quarterfin­als.

Scott also added six rebounds for the Rams (23-9). Joe Palmer scored 14 points while shooting 5 for 6, including 4 for 5 from beyond the arc. Isaiah Stevens had 11 points and went 4 of 11 from the field.

The Spartans (9-23) were led in scoring by Alvaro Cardenas Torre, who finished with 18 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Myron Amey Jr. added 17 points and two steals for San Jose State. Latrell Davis had 16 points. The loss was the Spartans’ sixth straight.

Colorado State took the lead for good with 3:59 remaining in the second half on a layup from Patrick Cartier to make it 58-56.

“I thought down the stretch in the last 5 to 6 minutes our guys executed beautifull­y, we made some big shots, we got the stops when we needed to,” CSU head coach Niko Medved said.

Nevada swept the Rams during the regular season.

NEW MEXICO 82, AIR FORCE 56>> JT Toppin had 18 points in New Mexico’s 82-56 win against Air Force in the first round of the Mountain West Conference Tournament.

New Mexico will play third-seeded Boise State in the quarterfin­als on Thursday.

Toppin added 11 rebounds for the sixthseede­d Lobos (23-9). Jaelen House scored 16 points and added three steals. Rytis Petraitis led the way for the 11th-seeded Falcons (9-22) with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Beau Becker added eight points and two blocks. Byron Brown had seven points.

FRESNO STATE 77, WYOMING 73>> Isaiah Pope scored 22 points, Leo Colimerio made a go-ahead shot with 20.6 seconds remaining and Fresno State knocked off Wyoming in the Mountain West Conference Tournament to snap a seven-game losing streak. Fresno State will play top-seeded and 18thranked Utah State on Thursday.

Pope added five rebounds and three steals for the Bulldogs (12-20). The Cowboys (15-17) were led by Akuel Kot, who posted 23 points. Wyoming also got 19 points and six assists from Sam Griffin. Brendan Wenzel also had 15 points.

NO. 20 BYU 87, UCF 73>> Fousseyni Traore had 14 points and 10 rebounds, Richie Saunders scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half and No. 20 BYU squandered a big early lead before pulling away late for an 87-73 victory over UCF in the second round of the Big 12 Tournament.

Dallin Hall also had 13 points and Trevin Knell scored 12 for the fifth-seeded Cougars (239), who hit 14 3-pointers and matched the bigger Knights on the glass to advance to play fourthseed­ed and No. 25 Texas Tech in the quarterfin­als Thursday.

Darius Johnson did everything he could to keep UCF alive, hitting six 3-pointers and scoring 32 points.

UCLA 67, OREGON STATE

57>> Dylan Andrews made seven 3-pointers and scored 31 points — both career-highs — to help

No. 5 UCLA beat No. 12 Oregon State 67-57 in the first round of the Pac-12 Conference Tournament.

UCLA (16-16) advances to play No. 4 seed Oregon in the quarterfin­als on Thursday. The Bruins split the regular-season series with the Ducks, losing 6459 on the road before a 7163 win at home.

Jordan Pope led Oregon State (13-19) with 16 points.
