Grandview’s Betts named Gatorade player of year

Grandview junior Sienna Betts was named Colorado’s Gatorade Girls Basketball Player of the Year for the second consecutiv­e season, it was announced Thursday.

The 6-foot-4 forward won the award after averaging 22.5 points, 15.6 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 3.3 blocks and 2.2 steals for the Wolves, who reached the Class 6A Sweet 16 after winning back-to-back titles her freshman and sophomore years.

Betts carries a 4.33 gradepoint average, volunteers for the Special Olympics and Ronald Mcdonald House, and assists at youth basketball camps. She is verbally committed to play for UCLA on scholarshi­p as the Class of 2025’s No. 3 overall recruit in the nation, according to both Prospects Nation and ESPN Hoopgurlz.

League, NHLPA reach settlement over Perry’s terminated contract

The NHL and NHL Players’ Associatio­n have reached an undisclose­d settlement to resolve Corey Perry’s situation with the Chicago Blackhawks when they terminated his contract. That’s according to two people with knowledge of the decision.

Chicago cut ties with Perry in late November, saying he violated his standard player contract and team workplace policies. The 38-year-old winger is back playing with the Edmonton Oilers

Jagr bobblehead­s stolen en route to Pittsburgh, foiling giveaway promotion

PITTSBURGH>> Jaromir Jagr is missing. Well, the bobblehead­s of the former NHL star are anyway. The Pittsburgh Penguins say a shipment carrying bobblehead­s of the franchise icon was stolen after arriving in California.

The team had intended to give the bobblehead­s away to fans during their home game against the San Jose Sharks. Instead, the club will give fans a voucher that will allow them to pick up the item at a later date.

The team says it is “shocked” by the theft and is working with authoritie­s in hopes of recovering the items.

Sinner stays undefeated to reach Indian Wells semis; Wozniacki exits with injury

INDIAN WELLS, CALIF.>> Jannik Sinner has defeated Jiri Lehecka to reach the semifinals of the BNP Paribas Open and is now 16-0 this year.

Sinner’s streak includes the Australian Open title he won in January. The Italian is 19-0 overall dating to last year’s Davis Cup. He’s won 21 of his last 22 sets.

On the women’s side, topranked Iga Swiatek advanced to the semifinals Thursday for the third straight year when Caroline Wozniacki retired with a foot issue. Swiatek was leading at the time after rallying from a 1-4 deficit in the first set against the former world No. 1, who is making a comeback after retiring for 3 1/2 years.

Ohtani shares photo of his new wife on social media

GLENDALE, ARIZ. >> Shohei Ohtani has revealed the identity of his new wife with a photo of the couple on social media. She is Mamiko Tanaka, a former profession­al basketball player.

Ohtani was photograph­ed standing in front of Tanaka in front of an airplane alongside his Los Angeles Dodgers teammate Yoshinobu Yamamoto. .

The 27-year-old Tanaka played for the Fujitsu Red Wave in the Women’s Japan Basketball League from 2019-23. Ohtani revealed in February that he was married, saying his bride was “a normal Japanese woman.”

But he gave no details about her identity or their wedding.
