On South Broadway? Don’t miss this corndog

Editor’s note: This is part of The Know’s series, Staff Favorites. Each week, we offer our opinions on the best that Colorado has to offer for dining, shopping, entertainment, outdoor activities and more. (We’ll also let you in on some hidden gems).

I’m thrifting with a friend from out of town? Corndog.

I’m out bar-hopping on a snowy Saturday night? Corndog.

I’m running errands and I need a quick snack? Corndog.

There’s one particular treat in Denver that I never pass up if I’m in the neighborhood. It’s the glorious beef frank with cornmeal batter from Sputnik on South Broadway.

These corndogs are always hot and always crispy and only cost $5.50. They are the perfect snack for any occasion. If you’re in a rush, get one to go. If you have time to sit down, enjoy the full dive-bar experience.

Want a whole meal? Add on a big basket of fries ($6.50), or try the pulled pork tacos ($8) or The Spicy Dipper sandwich ($13.50). Sputnik has a full bar with beer, wine, cocktails and even zero-proof options.

And one of the best things about Sputnik is that it’s also veganfriendly, offering a vegan sausage alternative corndog ($7) that is so delicious my vegan friends have tried to send it back in fear that they had received the wrong one. (They didn’t.)

Plus, Sputnik has plenty of other vegan options to round out your meal like mac and cheese ($9), a jackfruit Cubano ($13.50), a Bahn Mi sandwich ($12.50) or a falafel bowl ($12.50).

The corndogs are the biggest selling point for me, but Sputnik is a favorite among many of my friends for its laid-back atmosphere, good music and cheap food and drinks.

Sputnik is open from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday-sunday and 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. Monday-thursday. The kitchen is open until 1 a.m. every day. Happy hour runs from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday-friday and latenight happy hour (drinks only) from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m.
