Idyllwild Arts focuses on the importance of water

- Emma Haber

On April 15, Idyllwild Arts will host its 7th annual symposium for “Art in Society.” This free public event will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the school’s Idyllwild campus at 52-500 Temecula Road #38.

The symposium will showcase Idyllwild Arts students as “Citizen Artists” through collaborative, interdisciplinary works exploring water’s historical, literary, scientific and creative significance.

Inspired by the students’ fall 2023 fundraising campaign with Gravity Water, which provides clean water access globally, the event examines water’s impact on our lives and art forms. It will feature guest Lula Washington of the Lula Washington Dance Theatre, who will portray water rituals and movement from around the world through dance.

Representatives from Gravity Water will also present on Idyllwild Arts’ inaugural global campaign and in support of a Vietnam clean water project.

Six student-led projects will spark conversation by exploring the connections between water and various disciplines. The collaborations between departments include relating water to music and math, an interactive installation combining film and environmental studies, a performance examining the complex relationship between communities and their water and visual art symbolizing water as an essential element of human life.
